I saw the opening ceremonies with J Lo and Pitbull.
I'm not impressed.

I agree completely.

Soccer is a friggin bore.

On a related note, here where I live, we were recently awarded an MLS (Major League Soccer) franchise. We already have a minor league soccer team that will, starting next year, be in the majors.

Just a couple of days ago, they released the renderings of the "soccer specific" stadium that's slated to be built downtown near the NBA arena...

I don't much care, but as long as it boosts the local economy & the soccer fans like it, I'm OK with it.

Great news guys.... With the Air Hawk, flat balls are no longer a problem!!!

Yeah, it's OK I guess. Kinda basic looking on the outside, but they put as many amenities inside as they could afford on the rather limited budget they have to work with.

$110 million doesn't buy a whole lot of sports stadium these days.

The only people I've known who liked soccer were 3 year-olds and their fathers.  As soon as the 3 y/o outgrows it, so does Dad.

It's a tad purple.  Then again, it's soccer.

Purple is the team color.

Ergo, purple stadium.

Yeah, we have a purple team, too.  The Sacramento Kings.  They're also getting a new arena that's pretty damned purple.

I don't care about soccer, but then again, I don't care about baseball, or basketball, or "American football" either, so...

I do, but then again I'm from the UK. I hope my team (England) wins everything, but I doubt it. Spain is probably going to come out the champion.

While I will say that I think the World Cup has been so over-advertised and driven into the ground, for God's sake, it only took the NBA 2+ months for their finals so I can live with the World Cup hoopla better than the bball playoffs!

^^ Yeah the NBA playoffs are entirely too damn long.   Over half the teams in the league get in which makes getting to the playoffs nothing special to begin with, and more often than not the top 4 teams end up facing each other anyway.  Of course they'd never shorten the playoffs since that means less games which means less revenue from TV and ticket sales.

After the lockout in '98 I began losing interest in basketball, and it's been on a steady decline to the point I've been done with it for a few years now.

The NBA's lost me too, since Jordan's second retirement (1998).  I only watched one NBA game last year and it was the very last one (Game 7 of the Finals).   There was more allowed traveling going on than an airport.  This year I watched exactly 0 NBA games.  That's nil for somebody who is following the World Cup.

In Brazil, the stadium wasn't quite ready and the economy is in somewhat of a free-fall, so locals are understandably pissed. Yesterday, they had a 'wobbly staircase', doncha know...but "It is going to be all fixed, tomorrow!".
All-around bad things, when viewed from one side.
I've a friend and colleague who lives and generally works from Rio. He's attending some of the games and tells me they can be death-defying adventures.
I've another friend in Hong Kong who is another huge fan and got me entered in a contest to go there and watch games, but I ended up in the swamp, instead (which, after I JUST got through describing the heat and humidity, overcrowding and aggressive people, redneck drunks, dope dealers, and cheap whores everywhere, he tells me it "sounds just like HK - but we have MORE lights and FASTER cars! C'mon over!...".)
I ain't got that kind of money or interest these days, and, well...I think there is a legal '1 child per family law' in China, so I'd probably get executed for having five (5), or, with my luck, at least lose 'Long Silver JohnDong' which would probably end up on someone's 'PuPu Platter'.
IN ANY CASE...soccer fans are serious and can be brutal, which can turn sponsor countries into 'police states', given extreme times call for extreme action.
Think I'll hide in the swamp, for now...but I *AM* watching the games, and *AM* worried about him...

Our pups played, but only youngest daughter stuck with it. It used to bore me to tears until I started watching the really skilled and/or intense players (my youngest daughter is both). She has been repeatedly approached by pro teams (NWSL) for years, but stuck with running soccer camps for kids, which helped put her through college and get her mountain retreat by her 23rd birthday...

Of course as the typical Midwestern dad, I coached both my son and daughter's soccer teams.

The first year, when my son was five, the team was co-ed.  One practice, I had them line up and practice kicking it to me in the goal.  I looked back in the line and saw one of the girls looking down at a boy facing her.  She had this horrified face.  I walked up to them only to see that he was showing her his junk.

I calmly told him to pull up his pants, walked him over to his mom and told her what he did.  She blew it off and said he has a bad habit of doing that.

Well, years later, the little sh*t was arrested multiple times ranging from drug dealing to sexual battery.

LOL

And why do I get the feeling that at his arraignments Momma Denial was there by his side pleading to the judge "My darling son is a fine upstanding young citizen, your Honor, and has been his whole life.  He just has a bad habit of doing those things."
