Redd Foxx. Jon Elroy Sanford (December 9, 1922 – October 11, 1991), known professionally as Redd Foxx, was an American comedian and actor, best remembered for his explicit comedy records and his starring role on the 1970s sitcom Sanford and Son.

It was all of the above, including ironic.  A comedian who people see as fun and zany and full of life, offing himself the way he did, is practically the textbook definition of ironic.

So is anti-Jew Hitler's supposed Jewish ancestry.

So is the incredibly wealthy John Lennon telling us to "imagine no possessions".

Even your own Redd Foxx example qualifies.

Thanks Ron. I accidentally put Fred because I got Redd and Fred mixed up and was also thinking of Fred Sanford and put Fred instead. I have changed the name to Redd.
My name is Donathan, pronounced the same way you pronounce Jonathan, except with a D.😀 Hitting on a Lesbian who speaks to you and about you like trash means you're REALLY desperate! 😀

I'm guessing this list of "funniest characters" are what's currently on TV rotation today. That's probably why you don't see older characters here, like Bullwinkle, or Popeye, or even Pink Panther. Not sure if MTV still airs "Daria" though. But... Lisa Simpson? George Jetson? Really?
