Surprised, at 8PM PT on 1/1/20, that no one has posted a year-end thread yet. So here we go....
Again, 2019 was too stupid and ignorant on the advertising front to file just a Top TEN list... One of the worst companies this year was Liberty Mutual. One of their worst commercials has been the on-going Limu Emu series, with a dorky detective guy and his emu sidekick. Would like to know who came up with that awful idea, and still believes the Liberty Liberty Liberty Liberty jingle is the BEST jingle in the history of American advertising?!! Every time I mute them! Also hated the Witness commercial, where shadow guy jumps into the green screen known as the New York Harbor (and then cut stupid jingle), and the Free Zoltar ad, and the outtakes ad, and, and, and...ALL OF EM! Then there was the other insurance dumba$$es of the year, GEICO. All started early on in 2019 with their Best of Geico commercials. They brought back some good ones, yes, but many dumb ones too. Like frigging Maxwell wee wee wee, plus the Camel on Wednesday too. Happy to have muted the Maxwell pig as the suited guy started saying 'could switching to Geico...' I hated it in 2012. Hate it now. Also did not like: 'Hibachi Grilling' - where the dumb guy juggles kitchen utensils 'Mother Lode of Ice Cream' - the fk does ice cream have to do with insurance. Can someone translate that? 'I Want it That Way' - where the researcher in Siberia off-key sings a Backstreet Boys song. Who greenlighted THAT atrocity?! May be one of the worst GEICO ads ever. Went on for months throughout the spring/summer/early fall this past year. 'Best of GEICO Winner' - all the mascots in one dressing room. Marketing people have no brains do they? 'Ball Pit Office' - not going to say anything about this one... 'Horror Movie' - a bunch of dimwits making bad decisions in a horror movie. But hey, GEICO saves you money! Fk off. Now for some other horrible ads of mine, outside of the two terrible insurance companies: Allstate 'WHAT? WHAT?!' - For months on end it aired. And continued to air. Mayhem's worst ad yet? Little Caesar's 'Old Family Photo' - The fact that the stupid 'cheeeesseeeeee' line popped up about 3 or 4 times in the 30 second commercial was enough for me. Instant mute after the first airing. Awful pizza and awful/strange commercials. Progressive - anything with Box this year, including the class reunion. 2020 resolution: Smash! The! BOX! And most anything with Flo and Jamie sucked this year too. DIRECTV - 'Little League' with the 9 year old with long hair and the coach talking about 4K. I got sick of it after 2 or 3 airings. And I saw it hundreds of times last year. GrubHub 'I Want it All' - And I wanted it GONE by the 5th or 10th airing! Pull-Ups Rap - Just because it started playing in 2018 and continued to air in 2019 and I'm sure is still on the air somewhere. Rappin crappin diaper garbage. Shameful commercial. Macy's Back to School ad where the stupid kids dance to garbage pop down the hallway with roller blades and a 10-year-old boy comes out of a sports car looking like he's worth $1,000,000. Hurl-worthy back to school ad. US Cellular - with the singing husband botching the Deck the Halls lyrics. Hurl-worthy Xmas ad! And finally, being bombarded by these local commercials about 4 or 5 times this year, running 150 times a day on local stations: "THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME CHANCE TO SAVE 40-80% ON A REVOLUTIONARY NEW HOT TUB OR SWIM SPA...TRAC CENTER PASCO!" Also ran about 50 times during the week of the sale on local radio. Complete with warning 'buzzers'. Why does the HAPO Center (ex-Trac) invite them back every year? Several times a year? OK, I'm done talking and hating. Now it's your turn! Write away!

Yeah, the LiMu Emu and GrubHub are high up on my sh*tlist.
The top spot for me would have to be that insipid Skyrizi commercial / song. (It's not even a jingle...it a full blown crappy song!) |

So many commercials. Many of them on my list were on my list last year. Shows just how creative the adholes are.
Mass Mutual Dancing Idiots All Real People ads All NFL Shop ads - ghetto to the max. I mean congrats on paying a lot of money on shirts for the privilege of advertising for an organization that has more money than God. All Old Navy dancing ads. So basically all Old Navy ads. Peleton and the doe eyed dingbat. And all of the other ones too. Walmart Holiday ads GMC One for you, one for me Pepsi - touchdown slide ads. I hate choreographed touchdown celebrations. So fkn stupid Sprintern and Paul. Seriously, just go tf away. Amazon - Everybody needs somebody to loooooovvvveee boxes. That damned song is still going through my head. iPhone - all of their horrible, loud, flashy, in-your-face commercials. I hate it when the new iPhones come out every year. Discover Card twins - It feels like I'm not really trying anymore, but these commercials have been on forever and they've always sucked. Verizon Blanche New Skin talking wound |

Yes, Amazon's stupid singing boxes. From the same people that brought you Alexa. Making people lazier, one request at a time.
Also wanted to add Sour Patch Kids. Thank you for annoying me for about half of the year with your stupid commercial involving the teenager coming home and the 'kids' blowing air horns at her ears. I'd like to take that master copy and shove it into an air horn and blow it into a million pieces.

I used to keep a running list of every ad that irritated me throughout the year. It was meant to be fun, but it's too much work, and not worth my time anymore.
I'm getting to the point where just about any ad strikes a bad chord for some reason or another, and they just keep getting worse. It's not fun, it's scary. It really is. Growing up, there were commercials that I actually enjoyed. Entertaining. Sweet. Cute. Timeless. Now? Garbage. Every single one of them. I can't watch broadcast TV anymore. Everything has to be recorded on the DVR and sporting events have to be muted, because I hate the announcers too. My age has nothing to do with it. Adholes are getting more and more ruthless, putting anything that their intoxicated minds think would get attention on a 15-second eyesore that each costs millions to make. It's destroying our culture rapidly. I'm very fearful of the future of television. All the costly streaming sites out there, cramming even more of this junk into our eyeballs and subconscious. Inevitably people are becoming mindless zombies walking around in earbuds and virtual glasses saying "Alexa?" and "Hey Google?" Sorry for ranting, but it's how I feel. Happy New Year, you guys.

WIRELESS earbuds. AirPods. Thanks, Apple, for taking the headphone jack out of the iPhone. Tim Cook's dumbest move ever. Forcing people to pay mucho $$$ for a special wireless earphone. People walk around in Beats that cost $200-$300 a piece and think they are amazing. I paid 1/3rd the price for a real pair of headphones: a Sennheiser with studio-quality sound. Blows the bass-heavy airpod/beat crap away. And as for muting commercials, I've gotten to the point where once a show goes to break, I mute the TV for the whole break. Looking at the VHS collection I have, chock full of 1980s and 1990s TV programming, the commercials were watchable, entertaining and sometimes funny. Pepsi and Coke had dueling ad campaigns in the 1980s. One half of America chose the 'new generation' while the other chose the soft drink 'just for the taste of it!' Budweiser had entertaining commercials back then too. Car companies. MCI and AT&T used to bash heads as well. AT&T had the True Savings and bashed MCI, while MCI wanted you to have a circle of Friends & Family to call, and even your own 800 number. Funny and crappy as-seen-on-TV products were advertised on late night TV. I have found old commercials for the Singer Handy Stitch. My mother used one of those forever. Compilations of music every 15 minutes during a late night movie, sometimes with record offers where you would mail $19.95 to the local TV station for a record set. Today's generation raised on Disney+, Netflix, Hulu and games like Fortnite and Roblox will NEVER understand 1980s/90s television. They will never understand the creativity that goes into commercials, the timeless ads that came back year after year, the fact that you had to put a VHS tape in and program your favorite TV show if you were going out for dinner, etc etc. And MTV had music videos!

A lot of what you said is how I live life. I never watch live TV anymore. All of my shows are DVR and FF through the commercials. I don't like sports but when they are on in my house, I can't stand any of the talking heads. I remember when I was a kid, my dad would watch football but always have the volume turned down because he hated Howard Cosell. It's the same for me, but they all drive me crazy. I hate them all. Here's to a new year, hoping that all of the adholes finally get the lobotomies that they deserve and that the screaming, vocal fry, horrible music and every other annoyance stops. I can wish, can't I?

"Use a cocktail stick! (said in fake British accent)", compliments of that stupid iPhone/AT&T commercial. Sorry Gordan, I will never be able to think of anything other than this when I see you. If you really needed to sell out, did it need to be to Apple/AT&T?

HALL OF SHAME--eternally BAD regardless of year ALL Toyota ads and subsequent buffoonery YES 'Limu Emu' actually trumps the Geico Gecko as thinnest stretch of 'creativity.. Doug as an actor can claim 'EMU RESEMBLANCE' as his sole attribute ll Bean for pairing ghetto equivalent of Skyrizi music to WASP clothing

I was thinking of starting the thread but, I got pre-occupied. But, this thread has some funny posts. Thank you. It's time for some of my turds of 2019. the real hurl inducing motion. For worst, all mine are equally bad a tied horse race. Here they are in no particular order. The year of rap crap overkill, OOOZempic to a bad 70's song. Lips, Lips and more Lips! And one wasn't bad enough, Ghetto beverage Pepsi had to have parts one and two of the Touchdown Slide. These make the Imu, Libertry Liberty, flo Toyota Jan just boring dreck. One reply romanced the stuff from the 70's and 80's but, even then the adtards were gaying up and crapping up TV land. Can't believe this one is 50 years old. I vasilate back and forth if I like or hate that Good N Fruity commercial. |

And again, my pet peeve, showing rich Peloton owners. When you look out the window, you can see this is a house on a lake with mountains in the background. Kinda pricey I'm sure.

Nobody mentioned the massacre of the Major Lazer / DJ Snake song "Lean On" by that affected speech sh|thole Kit Conway who has no audible talent what-so-ever, except to annoy people with ears. This is a pattern by the "hipper-than-thou" sh|thole advertisers who do the commercials for Big Data (Apple, Google, Amazon) and Big Auto (Volvo, Mazda, etc). They intentionally annoy because their feeble brains believe that at least annoying people keeps their commercial in the mind of the target audience. What they don't realize is that the target audience isn't stupid like them. For example; I will never, ever buy a Volvo because of the annoyance factor of this ad.
