Veteran actor William Schallert, a familiar character actor from the 60's and 70's who was best known for his role as the father of Patty Duke on The Patty Duke Show, died this past Sunday at the age of 93, just over a month after Duke herself passed away. He also appeared in a couple of Star Trek episodes.
He appeared on several westerns including Gunsmoke as well. RIP Mr. Schallert. |

As a matter of fact... From Wikipedia: As with many other character actors with long careers, Schallert's face was more recognizable than his name. Back then, many such B actors appeared in Westerns. Nowadays, they've appeared in crime shows such as CSI. |

I was very familiar with the name and put the face with it as soon as I heard them memorialize him on MeTV. I'm familiar with a lot of these 60's character actors from watching MeTV, especially the daytime westerns.
Some other names that come to mind are (in no perticular order) Mills Watson, Claude Akins, Simon Oakland, Victor French, Jack Elam, Nehemiah Persoff, Royal Dano, John Dehener, Dabbs Greer, Denver Pyle, Albert Salmi, Michael Ansara... There's a long list, but those are just some that I can think of off the top of my head. |
