NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I will miss this man forever. Daytime talk forever changed when him and Kathie Lee Gifford started their national talk show in 1988, and he was still there up to 2011 with Kelly Ripa. Then in 1999, he became the host for a little ABC game show called Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Regis went international once he said those words to John Carpenter: "What can I say except Debbie you're going to Paris and this is the final answer heard all around the world, he's won a million dollars!' F--K 2020!!!!! |

David Letterman is probably really mourning this one.
He and Regis loved each other. RIP Regis. Side note: I went to high school in the 70's with a girl whose last name was Philbin. I wonder if they were related. |

Remember that Millionaire actually started in the UK with Chris Tarrant on ITV. It premiered on Sept 4th, 1998, about nine months before ABC developed their version for the U.S. Both versions were great. (Well, except for the UK's Charles Ingram 'coughing' scandal - look it up if you have a chance).
Millionaire won entire weeks when it was in primetime. It beat popular sitcoms in the ratings. Regis is reponsible for primetime game shows returning to the airwaves. NBC wouldn't have put Deal or No Deal on without knowing the success of Millionaire. Nor ABC and and all the current game show revivals they have (Press Your Luck, Match Game, etc.)

I was saddened to hear about this one. Millionaire was the first game show I watched. Regis's humor and great relationship with the contestants made the show fun to watch. While other hosts have done a decent job, no one can ever replace him, not even Meredith Veira or Jimmy Kimmel, who currently hosts the show. I will miss his upbeat personality. R.I.P. Regis.

I was also saddened to hear about this.
I was never a big fan of daytime talk on the telly; it was, "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" that (by far) exposed me to Regis.

I only knew of him mostly from his appearances on Letterman and seeing him briefly in the mornings on LWRAKL/LWRAK, which I never watched longer than a minute or two.
I didn't even know who he was prior to seeing him on Letterman. Had never heard of him. |

I don't think I've ever watched him on anything. He never struck me as someone who might be funny or interesting or anything. Just your average Joe. Still, RIP to him. |

I was aware of the program, "Regis and Cathy Lee" but never watched it; it wasn't until "Millionare" that I got to know him a bit better.

Same here. Never watched his talk show, but watched him when I was little on Millionaire. I watched a lot of the reruns on GSN when they aired it for quite a few years. I especially remember binge-watching it in 2006.

On Tuesday Night, ABC aired a special on his life, career and legacy. It was pretty good. It included a virtual interview with Kelly Ripa, an interview and behind the scenes look that aired before his last episode of Live with Katie Couric. That segment also featured what used to be his boyhood home before it was demolished. His office had a lot of Notre Dame stuff on the wall, since that was his alma mater. The last part of his show was an interview in March before the pandemic hit hard with Jimmy Kimmel and him visiting the old Millionaire studio one final time. He will definitely be missed by so many. Thanks for the memories Regis!
