Anyone else cringe when that ad from the healthy children coalition comes on and blares out asking kids to—Get up, Get up, Get up, and Be a Player!  First they had the Shrek cast in it, now its the NFL players turn.

Are kids so lazy now that they need to go online to find out how to have fun?  I do like the part when they end it with "but don't stay on too long."  Oh well, they know about juniors porn addiction Tongue

I admit it is important, but did they have to be so cheesy with it?  I guess I am still stuck on the 70's PSA's on eating healthy  and getting exercise.  Do kids today think the ad is really hip?

I dont necessarily dislike the commercial, I agree with PaWolf, seems pretty important to me although it is true that its a bit cheesy.

I just like how we feel we need to TEACH kids how to play outside by having them log online for ideas.

Whatever did we do before the internet?

They should re-release this gem.  It will scare the kids away from the screen so they will run outside to get away from it.  Or laugh so hard that they'll work up a sweat.

I wasn't born yet when this came out, but it had a long run.  Gym class was extra fun when they played this song, eh?

Enjoy "Chicken Fat:"

Wow... how many of us here had to be told to go outside and have fun when we were kids? I remember my parents telling me that I had to be in by sunset, and then I was always coming up with excuses as to why I was not home by the time I was supposed to be. LOL

I actually have the record, HollyRock.  I have the exact one my bro got in the 3rd grade or so back around 1962.  One side is the long version, and the other side is the short version (presumably for the fat, lazy kids  LOL)

I think  a lot of this is due to:
Fear of pedophiles
Health scares (skin cancer, West Nile virus, Lyme disease)
Video Games
Computers
Cuts in PE programs

In addition to those reasons, there's  the idea that any 'outdoor activity' has to be 'organized', like a soccer or softball league, instead of just letting kids go out spontaneously.

It doesn't have to be organized, but it does (for the most part) need to be supervised - unless you happen to live within walking distance of a park, there are sidewalks between your house and said park, and there are no registered sex offenders en route.

I think the main reason why kids don't have so much unstructured free time, even within their own neighborhoods, is because both parents are working full time outside of the home.  After school those kids have to go somewhere, usually after-school care.

I do not cringe when it comes on.  Hell as long as kids does have fun, what is the point.  Hell when I was younger I had to be back in by a certain time.

I pass a YMCA pretty much every day going to the market. Last year, they built an outdoor skateboard "playground", complete with ramps and what-not.
All summer long, it's empty.

Of course I won't go into what I did as a child...when we played cowboys and Indians, there were really cowboys and Indians around.  Wink

My kids had limits, but we always knew where they were, and they usually were playing in the park near our home when the weather was nice.  They both played soccer...I even coached.  We had fun.

The key is, let them have fun.  I see too many young parents that put their kids in every program imaginable.  I truly believe they are living their lives through their kids.  Many kids are burned out at 12.

I played in california aqueducts.
Often we just ran around  and sometimes bad things happened.
Creepy men sometimes approached us but we knew how to get away or avoid them. Once a bum kept showing us his weiner.
My friend who was older started to make fun of him and then we all pelted him with rocks and bottles and he screamed at us and scuffled away.
I remember a neighbor kid was sexually assaulted by some old dude in our neighborhood.
This was in the 70s.
He was beaten up by a dad and some older kids because the kid told his older sister.
Police became involved and he no longer lived there. I always heard rumors but I do remember the fight as it kind of spilled in to the cul de sac and neighbors went out to the lawn to watch and call cops.

There were relationships and a network of people who didn't have to be friends, but they communicated.
Neighbors watched out for one another.
Kids ran in packs.
There was a sense of order to the crazy swarm of 10 year olds that rode their bikes up and down our streets.

This one isn't as bad as the one that played constantly while I lived in Florida. I never saw it in English, it was always Spanish and went along the lines of "vamos vamos vamos a jugar!" But vamos just sounded funny in place of "get up".

See? This is why kids today have no imagination. They spend all their time staring at a screen either watching mindless shows, playing video games or online. What the hell happened to kids playing outside, making up games and running around with their friends?

And what's with these parents? How come they don't grab the remote from little Johnny's hand, turn the TV off and tell him to get his ass outside and play? Or read a book? Why do we need cartoon characters telling kids to go out and play for an hour? An hour?! Why only an hour? Why not a whole day? Is Johnny going to die if he goes a whole day without his Yu-Gi-Oh? Please!

Its also video games. My husband's little cousin almost never played outside, he was glued to the xbox 360, the computer, and spongebob. No one ever saw a problem with it. We got him this AWESOME remote controlled race car for his birthday. I don't think he's even taken it out of the box, let alone went outside to play with it.

As a kid I spent more time outside then in. All of us neighborhood kids got together and played the most amazing made up games. I'd gladly spend all day outside, the only time I ever see kids playing outside these days is at the park.

Perhaps if they still made the Green Machine. Children would go outside.

This site is neat. Seems the people who built these awesome toys still get together in spite of the company going under. Plus it has an awesome gallery showcasing the history of all their toys

Not only are kids glued to their TVs, video games, computers, X Boxes and what the hell have you, but now, you can't evn take a freaking car ride without these over stimulated kids staring up at a movie they've seen 47 times.

What the hell is wrong looking out a window and watching the scenery go by?
