Another great channel circling the drain...on Sunday, 7/17 at 10 pm, History Channel will debut a reality show called "Pawn Stars." It centers around a Las Vegas pawn shop run by three generations of the same family. That multigenerational conflict thing hasn't been done in a reality show before. (Oh wait...American Chopper. The Exterminators. Never mind.)

On its web page for the show (link below) HC says...
Long before banks, ATMs and check-cashing services, there were pawn shops. Pawning was the leading form of consumer credit in the United States until the 1950s, and pawn shops are still helping everyday people make ends meet. PAWN STARS takes you inside the colorful world of the pawn business.
Talk about a shallow reason to have this show on HC!!! "People did this a long time ago, so now we're going to watch people do it today!!!" The promo showed people trying to pawn things with "historical value," and there was a bit about the requisite conflict between Dad and son when son bought something he shouldn't have.

Now, I'm not saying the promo I saw doesn't look interesting--it does. But, please...people doing stuff today in a routine business does not qualify as history.

I started to suspect HC was straying when they started with the "Life After Humans" series. Speculating on future events--yeah, that's what I want to watch on The HISTORY Channel, idiots!!!AngryAngryAngry

When the History Channel goes, all is lost.

I stopped watching the History Channel when they turned into the "OMFG WERE GONNA ALL D13 S00N!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111 Channel" for about a good 3 months. Now that they have other series (which are not so much about the history, but just the job how it is now), they got over it, but it isn't what the History Channel used to be about. I'd much rather have them go back to the days of "the Hitler Channel." At least it was about history and less on sensationalism. Even then, I stopped watching the History Channel when they started showing Dogfights a lot. Not that it isn't a bad looking show, but that single show spread a lot of mis-information about the aircraft (like using stats for pre-production examples or giving them a lower calibur cannon or something like that) to make the Western/Allied ones look a whole lot better.

Another channel biting the dust just to get people to watch their commercials. Unhappy

Every station will have a Reality Show by 2012.

Even TBN will have one soon!

Reality shows are a disease that has no cure. Cartoon Network recently got infected and now History? One day Reality Crap will die!

History Channel is becoming a joke just like Discovery and The LEARNING CHANNEL.

At least the name is accurate, since the good programming on that Channel is HISTORY!!!LOL

Well, looks like one night of history, in spite of themselves. 20 July being the 40th anniversary of the first Moon landing, they are going to have a bunch of moon landing programming.

I did like the portion of Pawn Stars when they hauled the Hotchkiss two pounder out to the desert to test fire it. They sank that potted palm tree with the first shot, at about 100 yards or so. Not bad, if it really was the first shot. I wonder how many takes they had to make for the cannon shot?

Actually they've had a reality shows before this with Ice Road truckers and Axe Men. I think these two got their foot in the door with the show Modern Marvels

Bill Maher addressed this recently in his new rules segment

On a side note, I was kind of annoyed on one part of the segment only because Maher tends to mock things like out of context media footage. But he maintained the "obama looking at her ass" deal when it was revealed that is was partial footage of him moving aside for an older woman.

I know, between the constant bible oriented crap and the doomsday crap I stopped watching the History Channel long ago.  I don't tune into Discovery Channel anymore since they've started doing the same damn thing:-/  I think both channels are owned by BBC.

No, that's how Obama's supporters spun the video. He was clearly checking out that girl's ass.

Well, seems that enough people complained about History cancelling Mail Call a couple of years ago. GySgt R. Lee Ermey is back with a new series called Lock And Load. Had a short history of artillery this evening. It will be on Friday nights.

Well, much better than watching most of the crap on TV. Nothing like an old fashioned marine leading a crusade against watermelons! LOL

I actually liked the "Life After People" series, even though technically it wasn't "History" - I thought it was an interesting concept. Kind of neat to see CG simulations of crumbling cities of the future. Kind of like New York in the movie "I Am Legend."

I was watching Discovery last night (some show about Lightning - actually science related, like what they are supposed to be showing). During the commercial breaks, they were hawking a new series "Swords" - a reality show about Atlantic swordfishing. Basically identical to "Deadliest Catch" except they're in the Atlantic and catching swordfish instead of crabs. I'm astounded that people actually watch Deadliest Catch in the first place, but is there really a need for a second series? Ermm

I just saw those commercials over the last couple of days. This makes 4 "fishing" series.
Deadliest Catch/ Swords/ Whale Wars/ Deadliest Sea. Thats not even counting "Shark Week."
Wonder what will be next, Deadliest Spot....... Tuna Wars....... Crawdad Week?

Aargh! That's another thing! I just don't get "Shark Week." I mean, of all the random things in the universe to feature for a whole week every single year, why sharks in particular? Yeah, sharks are kind of cool, but there's dozens of other more interesting things that deserve their own "week" more than sharks, IMO. Does the general public really dig sharks that much? Did it start out as kind of a tongue-in-cheek thing, but has become a tradition? Each year, when I see the ads for Shark Week, I just take that to mean, "Don't bother turning on Discovery this week because there won't be anything on worth watching."

Shark Week can go to the hot place; I'd much prefer something like "Tornado Week".

I'm tired of sharks, bears (all sorts), hippos, and elephants. Sorry, they've just been doing them toooooooooooooooooo much. Time to film some other creatures.

I'm thinking that was on The Weather Channel, maybe a few weeks back (my, how time flies)...you might have missed it.
