...and his stupid Total Transformation commercials.  "Improve your kid's behavior".  The only thing worse than the radio commercials are the tv commercials because one has to look at the droopy, walrus-like face of James Lehman, MSW.  I would love to see one of these "problem kids" do a total transformation on this guy...

His looks don't bother me.  The way he says "instruction", however, does.

It really bugs me when people inject that "h" sound into the "str" sound.  I have no idea why people do this.

I would really like to see a return to spanking in our culture. Was it Family Guy who had one of those programs? N-Diz, I know you know this...

A few nights ago, Stewie was trying to get his mom Lois to beat him.

Good lord.  I just saw another one of those darn TV ads just now.

James Lehman is an idiot.  ADD/ADHD can't really be managed by "transforming your child's behavior"...I used to know a guy with ADD whose parents tried something similar; since they ignored his ADD he does as well and now he's a mess.

If parents actually...gee I don't know, parented we wouldn't be seeing that guy.

Every time I see it, I can't help but wonder,
what IS it that could turn a kid's attitude around in 10 seconds (or whatever they claim)?

I'm gonna guess death threats.

Threats don't work on kids.  Especially because most threats that parents use are idle ones.  Now, a death threat actually carried out would turn a kid's attitude around in ten seconds.

Yup, anything not Brady-Bunch-normal seems to parse as ZOMGWTFBEHAVIORPROBLEMSERIALKILLER!!!!111

My parents were told I was schizophrenic because I'm bright and hence was easily bored in school...some other quack wanted to institutionalize me in my teens because I had an active imagination (lady, I write fanfic and play RPGs...little kids aren't the only ones allowed to have imaginations)

I've always thought James Lehman talks like he used to be an enforcer for the mob.  Not sure I'd feel comfortable going to a therapist who sounds like he used to whack people for a living...

ConfusedGuess I never saw this one until tonight.

Nathan mentions 'death threats'.

Others think other things.

I'm pretty sure it must be something more simple; chained and shackled to the back wall of a dark closet, but probably for longer than 10 seconds, unless that is how long it takes the psych drugs to take effect, after quick injection.

We just kinda, sorta raised our kids in a firm and fair manner - seemed to work.

I would like to see it go away. It's really not civilized at all to inflict pain on small children.
I don't understand why folks think it's OK. There's better ways. The problem isn't not spanking and wailing on kids. That just leads to fear and sneaking around and parents hitting more out of anger than because it's a good consequence.
It's about getting off your butt and parenting with respect and firmness. Which doesn't have to include hitting people.

I disagree.
Too many kids think of only themselves, these days.
I much too often see 'people without reason' or 'people without cause'.
They really need a 'spanking'; a 're-awakening'.
I believe proper discipline has its place in this world - starting with a nice, hard oak board...and I'm thinkin' you need a spanking.

Grrrrrr
Hitting people won't get them to respect others and think of something besides themselves. They'll probably just want to avoid being hit.

Man, I hate proper discipline. Usually because it's strict and stupid and resulting in me getting hit over ketchup being left out.
What a dumb reason to hit folks.

While I'm not for beating kids, I think kids should know that being spanked is in the cards.  Kids should know that there are consequences to their actions, and they're not always pleasant.

Syn, maybe it wasn't about the ketchup, but about learning to show respect.  If your folks keep telling you to put things back when you're done, and you keep blowing them off, I think a whack across the butt might be necessary to finally get the message across.  If reasoning and kind words and time-outs and threats don't work, what's left?

The trick is that kids need to be able to not only associate a (open hand) spanking with something bad, but also eventually know why it's bad.  I have a relative who uses the kind-words approach with her kids (started when they were toddlers)....it didn't work.  "Oh, let's be nice and not do that now"...fail.  My ex-secret service grandfather giving them a glare and a gruff "Don't do that"...worked every time.

I can only recall being spanked by him once, and it was well-deserved (I think I had wandered off and had to be rescued from a culvert by a neighbor).

WinkA PROPER 'whack across the butt' can be a real 'wake-up call' - and it must be earned rather than arbitrarily applied. In other words, the reason why the spank was applied should be crystal-clear to the offender; it helps mentally delineate the difference between right and wrong harmful actions. This is important - and *I* think more relevant these days - as those that do not get the message early are more likely to become our shame and tax burden later (or, well, *we* could stand a better chance of becoming their 'victims').

'Early Clarification' can lead to 'Later Socially-Acceptable Behavior'

I'll take my chances believing and living that philosophy (worked for us!).

~~~
You too can have your own 'proper applier'!
(my very own name is certainly on the back of one of these...)
~~~

Or, you can 'wimp-out' and just get the whole wrong, suffer ongoing delusions (believing that "improper paddleboarding only leads to future waterboarding"), and get one of these, instead:

Yup, Dreamstalker and Pa.  The goal isn't to spank the kids, but to avoid spanking them.  My good buddy Charlie has only spanked his 5 y/o twins once or twice, but they know it's within the realm of possibilities.  They know that his glare (he calls it "the look") means he means business.  As a result, they're really good kids.  Quite happy ones, too.  They know their parameters.  I think kids like knowing their parameters.  It makes them feel secure.

He explains why he's punishing them, but he doesn't reason with them as if they're adults.  He makes it clear to them that they're the kids, not the adults.  I think kids like their roles as kids to be made clear.  I think it's actually "freeing" to kids, in that it makes them feel secure in who they are.

ConfusedCrap, Thor! You make it sound as if all kids take early Myers-Briggs tests and score out the same and thus, the same overall principal should either be applied or not.
Not so.
I wasn't implying "all children should be beaten into submission", but rather there is a time and place for everything - including a well-earned swat.
Even our five were not the same - even as 'adults' (or, as so they can legally claim to be) a few STILL need a 'healthy reminder' now and then, but again, they all *knew* the possibilities - all the way to 'juvenile execution' (if'n that is what you want to call it).

Pa, I never said that.  And I never thought you implied that.

But, I agree that kids are different.  Some require more merciless beatings than others.  Wink
