dammit, I may blow a dollar on a lottery ticket every week, but this commercial makes me HATE! HATE! HATE!. The woman's voice annoys me...well, both their voices annoy me. ITs not funny and its not amusing, though its trying hard to be. But admittedly, my feelings about it are a bit more personal. I'll explain...

MY FREAKING HOUSE WAS DESTROYED BY A TORNADO IN NORTH CAROLINA less than a year ago! And I don't live in the country, I live right outside of Fort Bragg in Fayetteville. We were damned lucky to get out alive. At about 1:30 minutes into the video here, you'll see the pile of rubble that was my house for a few seconds. Not the house you see with a roof and everything, that was my neighbor. My house was completely blown away, both cars, smashed. One cat injured, but thankfully the others lived and Patches is ok now.

Also, my wife is from Minnesota so she dislikes the stereotypical way these old fogies speak. I don't blame her. I've met her family...all one million of 'em...and while they have accents and mannerisms they don't speak like that.

What irks me is that they use a tornado as a "selling point" in NC? Really? People are still rebuilding! Some people had to move entirely. AAARGH. I just hate this commercial and I hate the two old people in it.

(I know it sounds emotional, but it really sucked to have everything you own destroyed in ten seconds. I'm thankful we're alive...because we were in the house when the tornado hit it straight on...but I honestly thought as the place blew apart around us that we were all going to die. Its not something I think should be be used in an ad around here)

Oh man, sorry to hear about your house.

This commercial sucks out loud. I think the man is worse. At least I can tell the woman is TRYING for a Minnesota accent, but I can't tell what accent the man is going for. Plus he repeatedly puffs out his cheeks while he talks.  ??  I am curious: did your wife see "Fargo"? If I lived in Minnesota, I'd be seriously pissed at those horrible thick portrayals of the accents there.

The worse was "Raising Arizona." Great movie, but they all had southern accents.  They don't HAVE souther accents in Arizona!

The accents are horrible and no one, but no one says "pop". The tornado isn't a good idea either.

Your video: That guy in the red suv driving over power lines at the beginning?Wacko  Lot's of folks just meandering around "live" power lines - I assume their still live.
You have a basement? Your place is leveled, yet the neighbor's just had roof damage.Confused

No basements around here. The center room where the wife and I went for cover was about the only room standing. The tornado actually hit our house directly. It came across yadkin road, blew  away a few shops, blasted the house across the street to bits, and them moved right into my house. People who saw it were shocked that we were actually alive. My neighbor came running over right after because he was sure we'd been killed.

They say get in the bathtub if you have no basement. If we had done that e would have been killed for sure. The biggest, heaviest pine trie in the yard fell on that part of the house and crushed the spare room, the bathroom and our bedroom. The cats hid under the bed, which was pushed down into the floor giving them about a half inch of clearance before being crushed, so luckily they made it. Well, not all of the ctas....Patches ran into the den just as the roof came off. We though she got sucked out into the storm but we found her inside of a couch. (she somehow crawled in there) the poor thing is traumatized. rain, thunder or lightning, and she hides in the cupboard. She was a very adventurous young cat before, now she's kinda skittish and easily frightened. :( Heck, when I hear the wind pick up it makes me nervous. I had to see a shrink and take antidepressants for a few months afterwards. Remember in the news about the earthquake in VA (believe it was VA) this summer. I had just gone back to work and we felt the tremors inside. I was uncontrollably shaken by the possibility of another natural disaster so much that the commander told me to go home when he saw how disturbed I was. (I didn't....I knew I had to control myse lf or I'd start freaking out over everyt iny thing) I know thats a lot of unneeded info, but it just highlights why I hate this ad personally.

This commercial bothers me not just because of the tornado, but it is in bad taste, IMO. Many of my neighbors are gone, and there still are houses that have not been restored, rebuilt or anything. Though the construction in the subdivision is still going on, its not the same.

After all that, I don't blame you for hating a commercial that makes light of a natural disaster.

Lol saying pop is common here in Colorado, as well as in many other Western US states. We always know that someone is from out-of-state when they say "soda." LOL

I was brought up in Chicago, where we say pop.  I live in NY now, and had to learn how to say soda, so people wouldn't look at me like I was crazy.  I'm bilingual.Big smile

"Pull over at the pop machine. I need a bottle of pop."

"Hey Wally, did you bring the pop for the party?"

"Hey honey, did you put pop on the grocery shopping list?"

LOL Sorry, I just can't use "pop" in a sentence w/o laughing.

I think the word they are looking for is "carbonation". I doubt they mean burnt soda.

If I had the choice between saying "pop" and saying "flavored carbonated beverage", I'd probably go with the latter.

We do that here in Pittsburgh, too. Either that or we call all the softdrinks coke regardless of whether or not the restuarant even sells coke.

And if someone asks for Coke here, half the time, the waiter will ask "Is Pepsi OK?"
