It's tme again to celebrate the man who "Discovered" America, thing is He NEVER set foot in the land that eventually became the continental United States (The closest he got was the Bahamas). The first european who set foot in the continental US did his thing nearly 500 years BEFORE Colombus did, so lets give homage to the man who did this, Lief Erikson! Big smile

ShockedBaaaaaaaaad Regulus!

Columbus Day as many of us were taught in pasteurized schools was a day to celebrate - when the worlds collided and only good things happened thereafter and a Spanish guy named Columbus sailed the high seas in three tiny boats: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
The natives were so awe-struck, as was Columbus and his crew that they danced and partied and gave each other gifts to always remember each other by - in fact, the Natives even named places in the other 'persona blanca's'  honors, such as the great tourist attraction, Columbus, Ohio - far, far away from where they met, but they did this after they figured out the stinky white guy wasn't Spanish at all - in fact, nobody really is certain what he was. And wouldn't you know, the blancas also bestowed other gifts, such as syphilis and assorted other illnesses which decimated the population around the time Columbus called for his little buddy, Cortez the Conqueror, to come help murder tyrants in Mexico City and locals everywhere else, while helping rid them of all that golden junk littering the cities as they raped and pillaged and taught the locals the bad Spanish lingo, instead of Engrish. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaa, Reg...where do you think Columbus's ships got their names? Correct! From things the locals were totally sick of - El Niños, Pinto Beans, and a very stinky native transvestite in a Santa Suit, who called itself 'Maria' and dated Columbus himself.
There you have it and now hopefully you can understand why every country in the Americas celebrates the second Monday of October...but we are the only ones dumb enough to call it 'Columbus Day'.
