AAAAAARRRRRRGGGH!
Instead of worrying about the target aged advertising losing money, maybe focus on keeping your shows less suckish and then maybe you can demand a better ad dollar. These niche networks worked because they were unique to the industry. Right out of the gate the networks knew who their target was. The ads were geared towards them and it created a sort of ecosystem that worked. Now these greedy monkeys want to expand that, thus changing the network from being unique to being more like the norm. All networks seem to be blending into a grey blob of programs that have no focus. I really believe in my cold heart that the death of creativity in television today lands squarely on the shoulders of those who go the cheap route and pump out useless reality tv. Once the idea of low budget, high hype=big $$$, it all fell apart. If every reality shows disappeared today, what would be left? I really enjoyed having a couple of hundred channels that catered to small groups available to me. It actually broadened my interests and gave me true entertainment. Now it seems like we slid backwards and the channels are all the same leaving us to hunt and peck our way through the menu hoping to find something. It's really sad because many good shows that may have thrived, now are lost because we have no way of connecting it to a particular network. I cannot say just how many shows I have made mental notes to watch only to forget them or not be able to find them because I scanned for thirty minutes and had no way to find them. At least if it were sitcom, I would start in the big three networks, or if it were about a giant power plant, I would go to TLC or SCI channel, now it is hit or miss randomness. Niche networking made life much easier. Reality tv has become a cable virus that consumes every channel and lowers the overall quality of programming that surrounds it. Honestly, if there were a REALITY NETWORK, it would seriously need like three channels just to show them all. Perhaps this is why I now look online for shows that interest me before looking on tv. As I have said in the past, we should do away with all networks now and have an a la carte program menu. We choose what and when to watch. The cream rises, and the crud sinks. I am seeing glimpses of this on Cox cable where the Prime time on demand is a growing trend. I can see the current shows I like for free on demand and not have to wade through the subtufuge. <\this concludes my rant> |

Good article, MTVsux.
Good commentary, Shadow.
I was just noting last night, how there used to be a block of about 10 channels in the upper 200s (of Comcast) that I used to go to fer sum larnin'. Now, there are maybe 4.

I'd be willing to bet cable companies would be surprised at how many people would go for a la carte tier. They could continue to offer 200+ channels but offer say, a 20-50 channel la cart option.
Digital Basic
Digital Premium
Digital a la carte....... pick your 50 channels
How hard can it be?

I couldn't figure out where else to put this, but the announcer for all of Bravo's show ads sound like the guy is yelling AND talking through a megaphone. Annoying!
