When I heard the America one I thought, "are they mimicking a wax recording?" and lo and behold it is a real one. Whether it is walt or not, it is still fascinating and a bit haunting that a voice from that generation and era is captured and speaking such prose.
On an unrelated note. This site has the earliest known recorded sounds. It is pretty crazy. Basically words recorded in smoke transferred on to a roll of paper. |

I had no idea it was Walt Whitman, although now that I know, it still doesn't change my dislike for the commercial. Levi's may be trying to be hip, but to me, the commercial just comes across as creepy. When I see the opening scenes, it makes me think it's a promo for a disaster movie. As usual, the commercial really has absolutely nothing to do with jeans.

What.. .does Walt Witman have to do with JEANS?
They didn't even HAVE Jeans to my knowledge back then. They had indigo, but you never see pictures of people back then sporting jeans. Walt Whitman never sported jeans in a single picture of him, even though he was quite gay, but it's not just gay people who wear jeans. Still they are canvas PANTS! Not a cry to war or something. urg Commercials are stupid. |

You're not fighting any power or sticking it to any man wearing 30-50 dollar jeans from Sears.

These commercials are bizarre and obnoxious.
Also, they strongly imply that Levi's cannot be worn with shirts if they're worn by a guy. Must be a law or something. (Perhaps that has something to do with the Whitman narration...HA!) |

![]() Maybe that should be a law if the guy has a luscious beautiful body. Whitman might have approved. |

SHHH! They'll hear you! I know dammit, this could be the beginning of yet another ugly trend. There'll be a spike in English lit teacher suicides (or english major murders) when some teen dimwit sitting in class goes "um, like hey Ambercrombie wrote that!" |

Actually, Looney Tunes has been credited with exposing children to classical music. I had a music teacher that would mention a piece that was in Bugs Bunny and so on.
Boston Philharmonics did a set a few years back where they did all the classics showcased in Looney Tunes and played with the cartoons on a screen. I wanted to see it, I heard about it and it sounded amazing. This was all before youtube and camera phones. Kind of like how Mister Rogers has been hailed for introducing kids to piano jazz |

You know how many times I've heard classical music on the classical station and immediately recall Wild E. Coyote, Foghorn Leghorn, or Bugs Bunny? "Camptown race is five miles long, do da, do da." |

Some here grew up knowing the William Tell Overture as the theme to The Lone Ranger, and the 1812 Overture as the commercial music for Puffed Wheat cereal.

Before I get to the commercial, to whomever it was who said Levi's weren't even around when Whitman wrote Pioneers, Oh Pioneers, you're dead wrong. Levi Strauss invented what we know as Levi's Jeans in San Francisco in 1850 to provide the gold miners with sturdy work pants. The jeans became popular with most outdoor workers including ranchers, cowboys, drovers, wranglers, miners and, yes, pioneers crossing the country.
The poem uses the expansion into the Western Territories as its basis and makes references to experiences Whitman had while serving on the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The obvious analogy to the Levi's commercial is that many of the pioneers and expansionists would have been wearing Levi's while trekking across country, but there is a deeper meaning. In the poem he mentions the “elder races .' This is a reference to the established European and Eastern nations and cultures and in his mention he compares the US to being “youths, western youths, So impatient, full of action, full of manly pride and friendship.” The video clips have nothing to do with hippies, it is modern day symbolism of what Whitman described in the poem as the country being youthful in comparison to the millennium old countries of Europe. If you look at the video clips you will see a lot of them are young people in their late teens or early twenties out of doors, just as the pioneers would have been.
Do I like the commercial? Not particularly, but I do understand the references and symbolism in it.

I made this account solely to whine about this commercial, but it seems like everything I was going to say is already done. However, I don't think it's quite as bad as "Be a rebel, eat Miracle Whip!", Levi's has a lot of history relating to American-y goodness. It's not "Be a rebel, wear our pants!", it's more like "Be American, wear our pants!" or possibly, "Our pants will free you to break new ground in the fields of locomotive travel, fireworks, and graphic but supposedly inspiring interracial makeout sessions!"
Then again, the poem has little to do with the images, and neither have so much to do with the pants, I'm not sure if nationality relates directly to tailoring skillz, and I have no idea what they were smoking when they thought this was a good idea. |

Well, I actually came here just to see what was being said about those HTC "You" commercials I hate so much (sometimes I read these forums, but I wouldn't say I "lurk"), but then I saw this thread...
I DESPISE these commercials... It is so hard to put my hatred for them into words. All I can say is: Thanks a lot, HIPSTERS! I can't believe anyone buys into this phony corporate vomit... |

If Levi Strauss wanted to be true to themselves and to the poem then they would have had filmed Levi-clad people trekking across the Sierra Nevadas in the middle of a blizzard while using the digitalized track of Whitman reading the poem and "Simple Gifts" playing in the background, but then that would most likely not appeal to their target audience - kids in their late teens and early twenties. Although based on the comments here, I have to wonder if they did not alienate their target audience with the commercial anyway. At least they did expose a generation of Americans to classic American poetry. |

I simply hate this commercial, I thought it was a positive ad about youth innovators or an ad for youth to help the environment or something. How wrong I was. It's a typical commercial where young, good-looking rich douchebag models frolicking around in pants made by 12-year olds in Bangladesh and sold at Wal-Mart! |

Technically, you're getting the art for free.
They're using the art to try sell you the overpriced jeans, possibly made in Bangladesh, which you'd possibly get at Walmart. But the idea of the art and the whatnot - yeah! |
