JEANS.  It's jeanS, with an S.  Would you say "trouser" instead of "trousers"?  Or "pant" instead of "pants"?  "Jeans" or a "pair of jeans" would be correct.

This has been bothering me lately, especially because I've been noticing people saying, for instance, "I'm a Yankee fan," instead of "Yankees fan."  Would you say you were going to the Red Sock or White Sock game?

Argh, argh, bah, humf**k.  Ms. Crankypants is in the building.

I think "jean" refers to the type of denim, not the style of pants.  So, unless they're referring to the particular fabric, they should say "jeans".  I imagine they're referring to the style of pants, so they're wrong to say "jean".

But here's another question I've had.  Which is correct?:

"The Yankees are my favorite team" sounds correct (as compared to "The Yankees is my favorite team").  But "The Yankees" refers to the individuals as well as an entity.  So, why wouldn't "The Yankees is my favorite team" be correct?

What about "The Yankees are a team" as compared to "The Yankees is a team"?  What about "The Yankees is the name of a team"?  You wouldn't say "The Yankees are the name of a team".

Perhaps this all depends on whether "team" acts as a plural within the sentence (and "name of a team" acts as a singular---even though "name" and "team" are both singular).

Oh, I give up.

I Googled "is team singular or plural", and I came up with this webpage about collective nouns.  It says (at the end of the page) that if you're in doubt, use another word.  Sounds to me like they're recommending an easy way out.  Sounds good to me.  Smile

But why is it called a "pair" of jeans? You're only buying 1 jean(s), not like a pair of socks where you get 2.Wink

I always wonder that. Along with pair of underwear.

And here is kushiro to be a big fat know-it-all and spoil the fun.

Pants, trousers, underwear, etc. used to be made in two parts, one for each leg.   They'd put on each leg and then tied or belted them around the waist.  Shirts were always one piece of cloth.
