Bad grammar in commercials annoys me to no end -- especially if that commercial wants to teach you a new language.
In the first line of this Rosetta Stone commercial, she says: "Are you one of those people who think you just can't learn a new language?" It should be: "thinks you just can't learn a new language." One thinks. They think. Maybe it's a bit nit-picky, and I did go to school for journalism, but the fact that someone probably was paid big bucks to write this commercial ANNOYS ME! And I should trust Rosetta Stone to teach me a new language, when they don't even know proper English!? |

I must disagree about the grammar. She asks "Are you one of [the group]?" The group consists of "those people who think they can't learn a new language". So, she is asking whether the viewer is one of "those people who think they can't learn a new language." So the grammar is correct. No offense, that's just how I see it.

Russian, among others. It is handy to have at least one common language aboard the ISS. Especially when all the visits will be made via Russian built spacecraft after we retire the Shuttle next year. And the Russians learn English. |

I see what you are saying, but if I'm not mistaken "of those people" is a prepositional phase. So the word "think" refers to "you" and not "of those people." |

Actually, think would go with you as well... i.e. you do not thinks
But anyway, Sgt. Saunders has it right. People...think
If she asked, "Are you A PERSON who..." thinks would be correct.

I realize that this is an old thread. This commercial, however, does annoy me greatly because of this blatant grammatical error. I used Google to find anyone else who may feel the same way, and was directed to this forum. I joined simply to take a moment to gripe about this commercial.
The question posed in the commercial is, "Are you one of those people who think you you just can't learn a new language?" The verb "think" in this sentence is mistakenly matched with the word "people." However, the verb should be matched with the word "one." The phrase "of those people" is a prepositional phrase. A prepositional phrase is non-restrictive (or not necessary to the sentence.) The object of a prepositional phrase (in this case "people") should not be used to choose the verb tense. If one breaks the sentence down without the non-restrictive prepositional phrase, it would state, "Are you one who think you just can't learn a new language?" Clearly, this is incorrect. The correct statement would be, "Are you one who thinks you just can't learn a new language." |

The actress looks likes she's doing alot of headwagging, but if you follow the point of her chin she's spelling out "kill me".

Probably because of that grammatical error she was forced to read. Or the blouse. |

Nevermind the "just" that has no place in that sentence/question whatsoever........ seriously. It sounds like it belongs- but it really doesn't. Just ask anyone who has taken an english (yes, lower case "e") class since the third grade.
Hope you stick around labby.

I thought this commercial was for push up bra's. I'm too distracted looking at her vivid pink or blue blouse to have any idea of what she's talking about.

I just wish that one of the very few stations I watch would show that titillating Rosetta Stone one that people have complained about here. Not just for the obvious reason, but because the stations I watch show THIS one ad nauseum. That's MY big complaint about it.
