Cable tv in general has gone into the dumper.
I pray I live long enough to have channels a la carte, or skip that and make
my digital experience even better by making programs a la carte.
No more channels, just a library of programs that will be held on their own by their ratings.
If the war on reality tv cannot be won, we need to accede to it and find an acceptable way to live with it.

My cable has a search function that lists all programs by name/genre/ or by keyword.
We could expand on this and make all tv this way.  No more viewing shows on certain days or times, just by what you want to see.  Of course the season will be changed a bit for the programs but the 13 episodes can be released in bulk.

One can dream.

In some ways, I'd hate to see 'BIO' go down.
Currently, I'm watching 'Ripley's Believe it or Not', which I enjoy.
Today's episode reminds me of my very last roommate, before I got married.
"Robert", who performs a 'Death Dive', from what I think is a C-130 Cargo Plane; locked in a cage, dropped from the plane - it is an amazing little episode! I can watch it over and over.

About a week ago, I ran into my ol'Roomie and his two daughters as they were touring our 'back yard', The Falls.
Lo and behold, HE STILL does do silly things like that. He is a real scream; we had a great time - and now he is training his daughters to 'live every minute'...LOL

I'd say Boomerang as well.

No Looney Tunes, No Ruff and Reddy, No Secret Squirrel, and No Boomerang Zoo!

Now how can I see those obscure H-B cartoons like Loopy de Loop or Breezly and Sneezly.

Luckily I don't have cable because of this sh*t. And that's why I revamped my site as Save Our Stations!

One day TV will make an emergence and kill all this Reality Crap. But that is years now. Hopefully CN takes off CN Real because of little viewers and losing ratings. And Nick starts making New Good Spongebob episodes and gets rid of all this Live Action and moronic cartoons (except Penguins of Madagascar, witch is ok but didn't like it at first.)

Ice Road Truckers killed the History Channel. I said as a joke last year to my wife "watch them find a woman for season three". Guess what, they did! MTV has been unwatchable since I turned 25, I assumed that was because I outgrew it (and Bevis & Butthead was cancelled). I only watch the "Best" or "I Love the -blank-" stuff on VH1. TLC has been a joke for years, I'll occasionally watch "American Chopper" if there's nothing else on the 499 other channels.

I'm confused.  Are all of those networks ending operation?

Here's what happend Hootman, (And all of you in Rio Linda)

Cartoon Network used to be dedicated to Animated Programs
Nickleodeon was primarily Children's Programming, however in the evening they initiated "Nick at Night" and showed Classic TV Shows. This became so popular they launced a Channel that was dedicated to Classic TV Shows called TV LAND.
MTV aired Music Videos, primarily Rock and Roll, they also launched a Sister Network, VH1, which was geared tword Adult Contemporary Music.
The History Channel aired Programs geared tword History.
The Disney Channel aired all those great old Disney Classic Shows.
The Discovery Channel aired Science Programs. and Spun off some Sister Channels, TLC, which aired Educational Shows, and Animal Planet, which was geard tword programs featuring Animals.

Life was Good. Then along came a new kind of Show, the "Reality" Show. About 10 years ago they made their debut on Network TV, as they came on, quality programs began to disappear, one by one. It wasn't bad at first, the Cable Channels held their own for a few years, but then the "Reality" trend hit them as well. Spreading like some Malignancy from H-E-(Double Hockey Sticks), the Networks as well as countless others, became, IMO "Unwatchable". Now those networks no longer resemble what they started out as. I gave up watching a little over two years ago. I am beginning to wonder how much longer will thede networks continue to thrive. Have you heard anyone say anything GOOD about these Networks Lately? They haven't collapsed yet, but I see it happening someday. Youcannot continue to be successful if you continue to alienate your Audience. A House divided against itself cannot stand!

Well,

There are way too many channels/networks on digital cable or satellite tv.  So, it probably became extremely difficult for them to create new/refreshing programs.

Therefore, they thought it would be profitable to air what people were watching.  Why anyone watches "reality tv" is beyond me.   (I do enjoy American Idol however).  The rest are inane.

I also have some favorite network dramas that are as interesting as the 1950's/1960's dramas, but with today's technology are outstanding to watch.

So, to me, all tv is not dying..however much of it should.

I'll start off and say I'm glad I get broadcast TV. Not that there is much on to watch that peaks my interests, but I can't fathom spending money on television that shows commercials and shows either reality TV or crap that has nothing to do with their intended designations.

Like MTV, shouldn't they be playing music videos and music related shows?
History Channel, what is so historic about Ice Road Truckers? Sounds like they should be called Blue Collar TV. There are many channels that do not show their intended programing and it doesn't make sense. Is G4 still about video games?

We as the consumer have the right to voice our concerns. I think we need to stop paying for television and send them a message. If there is nothing on tv worth watching, then why pay for it?

Exactly! Or as I used to say. if they are going to make more money by selling more commercials, why should I have to pay to watch it?Sleepy

Great. Just as my cable system FINALLY adds Boomerang to its lineup, they start showing the same crappy cartoons that ruined Cartoon Network and made me stop watching it. The same thing happened with TV Land. Cablevision added it a few years ago, just as they stopped airing all the classic TV shows that I've never seen and wanted to see. I was lucky to see a few episodes of Mr. Ed before they took it off (that's one of the shows that I had never seen and wanted to see; another is Petticoat Junction).

PS - Regulus, we KNOW you got rid of your cable and only watch DVDs. You don't have to keep beating it into our heads.

Same with The Disney Channel! Just when I got satellite, they showed Vault Disney and I taped a couple of shows on that. And there were a few that I'd STILL like to see...but unless if d23.com shows classic Disney Shows or they release "Disneyland" on DVD...then we're pretty much f**ked!

I can't speak for ESPN, which I haven't seen in quite some time, but ESPN Classic mainly does just what its name implies, repeating a very mixed bag of sports shows (with some new stuff). And without pop-ups (except the tiny "CNN" kind, which - at least to me - are INFINITELY less aggravating), and without squeeze credits. I know the well-worn joke about off-shoots of ESPN is that they show a lot of "dumb sports" (as if anyone's ever proven what is and isn't a dumb sport!), but regardless of what kind of sports it shows, this network really seems to live up to its name.

They should call the History Channel the Doomsday/Conspiracy-Nut/Nostradamus Obssesive Fan network. Fortunately, their reality shows are few and far between.
VH-1 needs a major f*cking overhaul
MTV is R.I.P from normal reality and music for that matter!
TLC is the bastard daughter of MTV and Discovery Channel
Someone should tell these networks to rid their schedules of all their reality programming that is non-educational.

I used to watch CN back when I was much smaller. I just looked it up, and it looks like it isn't dead after all, at least in terms of still being on the air.

I wasn't aware of exactly how much it had declined. I mean, getting rid of Looney Toons? Those were the bread-and-butter of American animation - how can a cartoon station justify getting rid of them? And then there was the overglut of anime - it's almost as if Western animators just gave up making cartoons.

I was just having this conversation earlier tonight...

Cartoon Network is now a channel for 10 year old boys--ONLY--blegh (Okay, I must admit, I really do enjoy Flapjack, and, to a lesser extent, Chowder--but that's IT)... Adult Swim is CN's saving grace IMO... Still, there are a few shows on [as] that I hate as well (FAMILY GUY).

History is now the Doomsday Channel (or repeats of the same specials they've been showing for 5 years about Hippies and LSD).

Sci-Fi is now.......... SYFY (Not that it hadn't gone down the tubes long before that, IMHO)!

I even used to like LIFETIME! Now the only shows I can stand on that network are Frasier and Will & Grace...

I'll narrow it down even further to just Robot Chicken.

The problem is reality TV will never go away, and only increase. They don't have to pay actors (save for the grand prize for one winner); the writers are paid for a concept, not a weekly script; the behind the scenes people never got paid much anyway (production assistants make about $100 a day, for around 10-12 hours of work). Reality shows are infinitely cheaper to produce, and add the product placements- hell, cash money hand over fist for Mark Burnett and friends. Also- it is human nature to gawk at a car crash- and that is the TV version of a car crash.

As for American Idle? Sorry Hoot, I don't see what you see in it. I don't like watching karaoke when I am drunk in a bar, let alone at home when I am sober.
