I think this is a regional ad, as I know it is shown here in the DC/MD/Northern VA area and also in the Norfolk, VA areas. It is from the 'A Step in Time' Chimney Sweep company. The ad below is an older one, but it just shows you how stupid the current one is. The only difference with the newer ad I am referring to here as being annoying is they have the chimney sweep guy from the 1800s with the old clothing and top hat (identical to the little moving one above the lyrics in the video below) on in modern times on someone's roof sticking his poofy sweeper into the chimney while stupidly grinning at the camera. Oh, and instead of having the old-time kids saying the chimney sweep guy is here like in the ad below, we have kids that really look to be 30 years old playing Connect Four or a similar game yell up to their 'mom' that the chimney sweep guy is here when he knocks on the door without even getting up from the game. Yes, I'm sure they magically know the chimney sweep guy is here without looking through the door's peephole!
![]() Meanwhile, during the whole commercial you hear sung by the same excruciating woman's voice in the YouTube ad below, except here instead of the phone number mentioned in the ad at the end (which is I think the Norfolk area's phone number), we are pleased to hear "We'll clean your chimney as fast as you can, dial 1-800-Fire-Man...a step in time, a step in time." Everything else about the song as in lyrics, voice and background is identical to the local commercials here. First of all, I could see how a dirty chimney could cause a fire, but why have the phone number 1-800-Fireman? I'd think that number would be reserved for some Firefighters club or a fire safety company, not a chimney sweep company! What sucks is that I'd catch myself with the 'A Step in Time' song from this ad in my head from time to time a while ago because its so stupid and catchy! ![]() |

Ah yes, the infamous chimney sweep! Definitely a source of torture amongst my co-workers.
Possibly the most annoyingly catchy themes outside of Subway's "Five Dollar Footloooooong" commercial!I posted about how we "torture" each other with the jingle, and someone supposedly from the company sent me a VERY defensive message about my comment. |

I never owned a fireplace, but don't they make these special logs you burn that cleans the chimney like a chimney sweep would? I forgot to add in my original post, but they also have the chimney sweep guy (in full 1890s clothes) in some different ads warning viewers about chimney fires. The commercials go like this (what he says not exact but its the same overall): A step in time, A step in time.. A step--- (song interrupted) Chimney Sweep Guy: Chimney fires are dangerous. Call 1-800-Fireman today to find out how you can save your home from a possible dangerous chimney fire today. ![]() Sure, it's good to educate viewers about chimney fires, but isn't that what PSAs are for? |

I've seen one for something called "CSL" Chimeney Sweeping Log that is supposed to prevent fires. It looks like a clapper ad.

Yes, if you have a fireplace, you need to do this, if you don't want to burn your house down.

I lived in a little 1 story house with a woodstove for heat for around 10 years. I used those "special logs" once in awhile, the ones that say they clean your chimney.
But mostly, I just got up on the roof and used a chimney cleaning brush on a long pole to clean the crap outta the chimney every Fall before woodburning season.
But as Holly mentioned, if you can't actually do it yourself, it pays to have a Sweep take a look at your chimney every now and then.

Tiz, I absolutely HATE that commercial. I never took the time to post about it though because I didn't think anyone would know what I was talking about. Still better than the Chimney Hill song. PSA: don't look this one up, just don't.
