This advertisement is chillingly inappropriate at best. At worst - I can't find words to describe how I feel about this garbage.
I can forgive all kinds of things in the name of marketing, sure...and adults are capable of making their own decisions about their health and attitudes - but this is really way, way over the top, in my view. They are pushing (reference intended!) this stuff on a very young crowd - teenagers, it seems. All very thin. And wasted-looking, despite the rich clothes and accessories and great makeup. I thought that "heroin chic" was frowned upon now? Evidently not. There is no mistaking the references here. Went to the Macy's site to see what this bug juice is selling for...$72.00 an ounce. And here is the beginning of the blurb supposedly enticing you to buy this stuff: "Black Opium. The new feminine fragrance by Yves Saint Laurent. Highly addictive. Seductively intoxicating." OK, we get the flagrant drug references, YSL, and they are not cool. In my line of work I see so much destruction and devastation wrought upon families by alcohol and drugs - heroin, especially - that this ad toying with the notion that "opium is a fun thing to flirt with just a little bit, right?" leaves me just furious.

Agreed.
It just goes to show that in The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, it doesn't mean everyone was raised with morals, scruples, and values...it means if you have enough money, you can just about say and do on any media whatever you wish without recourse - and all we can do is say "it's wrong". Want it differently? We would need a concerted social movement somewhere in the lines of all this equality stuff going on which would stop stores and sites from selling the crap as so many see it as so wrong. All they took out of the product name was 'Tar'. Wonder when YSL will be marketing their 'Crack' & 'Meth' odors? |
