Philadelphia needs to go on a diet!

This is true.

But you can at least force them to pay for the cost of their unhealthy lifestyles.

The do-gooders behind this plan apparently have a pretty low opinion of the people they rule.

Why don't they just tax obesity?  I mean, if that's what they're trying to combat, they should punish the actual problem.  If that's not feasible, they should tax all fattening foods, plus any size of t-shirt that has an X in front of the size.

They're paying indirectly by taking the financial burden off of another area and funding something that needed funding anyway.

So the money the sugar heads are paying in user fees is freeing up other money.

And besides, that could always be corrected.

It all works out the same.

It's going towards increasing enrollment in free nursery schools.  Since when is nursery school supposed to be funded?

Like I said, the tax can always be redirected if the voters so desire, but that doesn't change the basic justification for making people who engage in unhealthy habits and lifestyles pay for the costs to the rest of society that they are creating.

The merits of funding nursery school can be debated elsewhere.

The nursery schools are daycare centers for the mostly illegitimate offspring of the one-parent family to be parked for the day while mom or dad supposedly works for a living.  Obesity is one problem, then there's this other problem.

That's pretty much what I was a-figgerin', DRS.

Anything to encourage or facilitate the parents getting out and working.

Stimulates the economy and increases the tax base.

No it doesn't.

From some website re free Pre-K in Philadelphia:

What is PHLpreK?

PHLpreK is Philadelphia’s FREE, new quality pre-K program.

Am I eligible?

PHLpreK is available to 3 and 4 year-olds who reside in the City of Philadelphia. You are likely eligible to enroll your child for the PHLpreK 2017-18 academic year if:
  • Your child has turned 3 or 4 by September 1, 2017
  • You are a resident of Philadelphia

There are no income or employment requirements

This actually discourages people from going out and working and stimulating the economy, etc.  Same with all the other free food and goods and services offered to people.  Why work when you have all your needs taken care of by the government?

I'll bet this is one of those places that has to beg people to vote, and offer them free rides to the DMV to get their free IDs in order to do so.

Anytime you free up a parent's time that would otherwise be spent looking after a kid or kids, the more opportunities that parent has to go out and work.

Also, kids who go to preschool have been proven to do better in later grades, with higher graduation rates and a higher likelihood of going on to college and a productive career.

So they obviously feel the program pays for itself in future dividends.

Plus, they accomplish it by making a bunch of sugar heads and fatties pay for it.

Win - win.

Yeah, it's great having the government raise your kids.  Philadelphia's a wonderful town.  LOL

From "Neighborhood Scout":

With a crime rate of 42 per one thousand residents, Philadelphia has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 24. Within Pennsylvania, more than 95% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Philadelphia. In fact, after researching dangerous places to live, NeighborhoodScout found Philadelphia to be one of the top 100 most dangerous cities in the U.S.A.

So, yeah---free nursery school and soda tax is gonna change all that.

I've never seen anything to back up what you claim, ol'Mule...then again, I haven't looked.
Having said that, I'll stick with my ignorance for now and claim this is simply a political 'Boho Dance' (the act of 'selling out' over maintaining integrity) and I'd rather scoop the lil'critters up and ship 'em on the next train to Nebraska while ripping 'Mom & BabbyDaddy's' food stamps from them.
Edikate me, please...PA does this for the spermmistakes, which SOUNDS wonderful, but don't you suppose this is more than just a 'soda tax'? what else gets short-funded to enable this?
Wink

Nobody is claiming it's a magic bullet. But it might help.

How long has the program been in existence as opposed to how far back your crime stats go?

How is Philadelphia all that different from Newark or Houston or Chicago or Cleveland? Big cities have a lot of crime. There are no miracle cure-all solutions but that's no reason not to try.

And no reason not to make the sugar heads and fatties pay for it.

Ever notice how people of "a certain political persuasion" never do anything but denigrate the ideas and efforts of people who try to find creative solutions to problems, while never offering ideas or solutions of their own?

Yes and no.

There may be every good intention from someone to attack the obesity matter in the Philly area and this has become a popular idea.
Question is: Is it realistic?
Who came up with it and who is targeted?
Keep in mind a lower level of intelligence can undermine any great solution to a terrible public problem.
Doesn't seem logical to tax your way to a cure, unless it might be a TAX BREAK, rather than penalty.

Why do people of "a certain political persuasion" always think every matter is something the government must get involved in?

The solution's pretty simple.  Cut down on the sugars you and/or your kids consume.

Hey, I see it every day.  People will buy an 18oz soda for $1.50 from the Subway at work, rather than walk an extra 30 feet to the vending machines outside the store where they can get a 12oz can for 50 cents.  This tells me that the extra cost doesn't matter to many.

This also brings me back to my earlier mention.  Buy the artificially-sweetened stuff!  Oh wait.  That's being taxed, too.  This tells me that concern over obesity is just the excuse to gain more tax revenue.

Diet beverages "are filled with artificial sweeteners and chemicals. Do we really want people to drink these?" said nutritionist Mary Story, a professor at Duke University's Global Health Institute. She did say that researchers had not found any proof of harm caused by the products.

"Do we really want people to drink these?"  That tells me everything.  It's none of your business, lady!  At least bring up some scientific conclusions before you start determining what I should or should not consume.
