Except that the term "saving wildlife" is highly flexible. I once read a study that found most of the birds "saved" died anyway, due to organ failure following the ingestion of too much oil (or whatever). Also, the environment is still contaminated, so released birds, even if they survive organ failure, end up getting covered in oil again anyway. Google the Rush Limbaugh story about a rescued seal following the Exxon Valdez spill. Tragic story - but the funniest damn thing you will ever hear. (Out of Rush anyway.) BTW: Rescued birds by Dawn dishwashing detergent does NOTHING to make me want to buy their product -- even if the birds lived. I guess I just don't care. I eat off dishes or paper plates, not waterfoul.

I think that the point you might be missing is that whether or not every last one of the birds cleaned with Dawn ultimately lived or if they died, Dawn stepped up and, at their own expense, donated and shipped a supply of their product to at least TRY to save them. And I'm sure many of them lived who otherwise would not have. PR opportunity notwithstanding, there is some merit in that. If a surgeon donated for free his time and skill to operate on a critically wounded person who later died from his/her injury, would that detract from the merits of the surgeon's efforts? "OK, fine. You spent fourteen hours on the operating table trying to save the patient, all on your own time with no expectation of reward, but he died anyway. Therefore, your gesture was meaningless". As for the Limbaugh story, I wouldn't dirty my eyes reading anything that obscene, deplorable reprobate slob had to say. Not surprising though that he'd find humor in some tragic circumstance involving an animal. |

From: https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2017/06/28/the-8000-sea-otter-that-vanished-in-one-swallow/ Joseph Haverwood, Shaverwood, Joseph something. (interruption) That’s right, Joseph Hazelwood. So what happened was there was an otter. Folks, otters, when they’re in the water are the cutest little things. They’re rodents for the most part. They’re just giant rats, but they’re like squirrels, a tree rat. They look cute as opposed to rats. And the otters are in the water and their two little paws are sticking out and they’re looking up. Everyone loves ’em and they found one just soaked in Exxon Valdez oil. So they rescued the thing and they took it away to clean it up, and they spent $80,000 cleaning up this one otter. The point of the story was the insurance company had to pay that money, $80,000 to clean up. And the day came where it was a successful project, they’re gonna release the otter back into Prince William Sound. And it was a momentous day for the community. It represented overcoming this ecological disaster. It meant saving an animal from the evil clutches of humanity behaving as it does, destroying the planet every day. They let kids out of school. They had like high school bands and stuff. It was like a parade and they had the little otter in a cage and they’re rolling it down the street, eventually down to the pier or the dock where they’re gonna release it to great fanfare. And the mayor, everybody is making speeches about what a wonderful thing that had been done here in saving the otter and cleaning it up, it was a symbol of what we could all do when working together, when we can put everything aside and come together and kumbaya and work for one idealistic goal, to save animals from the evils of oil spills. And they let the kids out of school, first graders, second graders, they’re so happy ’cause the otter is so cute. They even named the otter, I forget what the name was. It came time to release it, they lowered the cage, and after the cage was officially offshore, they opened the door to the cage and the otter swam out and it was sitting there like otters do on its back with its two front paws up looking cute as hell. And before anybody knew what had happened a giant orca came out of nowhere and swallowed the thing, just ate it like sushi, it was otter sushi. And the music kind of didn’t stop immediately, kind of like when you had a record at 33 or 45 and you turned the power off, it slows down. And the kids were looking, “Mommy, Mommy, what happened? What happened?” And it was nature. It was nature. Many people have tried to deny that the story happened since then, but we know that it did because the insurance company complained about the loss, $80,000 vanished in one swallow." |

Actually, Jimbo....
My point was that people tend to focus on the false narrative of saving wildlife with Dawn detergent. Although I don't have the facts at hand, I'm sure that on balance, Dawn kills much more wildlife than it allegedly "saves". But even that's not my point. In my experience, people believe what they want and that's usually aligned with what they already believe! People believe that saving birds from oil spills is a good thing. Dawn is just taking advantage of that. Ecologically, all detergents are harmful to the environment (to varying degrees). Personally, I use that orange liquid AJAX brand -- works wonders, and is much cheaper than Dawn. I'm sure it would kill a bird on the spot. But given the choice between a bird that's going to die anyway, and less time spent in the kitchen doing the dishes, well.... |

Since when is it NOT a 'good thing'? I get your point but couldn't you have said it yourself instead of quoting Rush Limbaugh!? |

I'm not a Rush fan either. I think he's a bloviated overblown blowhard who would say anything for money. But you gotta admit, that story is funny as hell. |

There is no such thing as a perfect solution to any problem. Anything is going to have some negative side. But Dawn detergent is used by biologists because it is hands down, the best and safest way to clean oil off of birds without harming them. Why Dawn Is The Bird Cleaner Of Choice In Oil Spills (link) Sure, dishwashing suds in sewer run off is not desirable for the ground water supply, but just letting thousands of birds slowly and agonizingly die because Dawn isn't so safe you can water plants with it and feed it to babies, is not something that humans should accept either. BTW, I didn't find the Rush story funny at all. But now I have to wash my eyes... |

I think the original idea of this post was about the dog in the State Farm commercial and how it exploits (?) animals. I personally love animals in commercials, oftentimes they're the best thing about the ad! In this SF ad, the girl is smart to have her dog along for the date because dogs have a great sense of who is good for you. I used to walk a Bichon Frise named Max and he would bark at anyone who was inebriated on alcohol, drugs or both; he could spot them a mile away!

Don't get me wrong, I love animals too. But my dogs bark at everyone (so maybe I should stop living at the bus station?) :) I'm actually a little impressed they got the dog in the SF commercial to "act". About the only thing my dog could spot a mile away is a slice of roast beef!

PaW's Prayer for Rush pleaseopleaseoplease babyjeezy... Turn back the clock a week or so and place Rush outside at some country music festival, smack-dab in the middle of his fan base. Make it at a nice time of day, maybe about dusk. Make the weather wonderful at a nice location - say, somewhere near a Bay. Let him wear a football jersey with the number '59'. If you really want to 'show the love', send 'The Rump' with him, wearing number '60'. Let them have a poppin', hoppin', & floppin' good time, doncha know...and let's make America look a little more intelligent and a lot less inbred once again. |

Helping others isn't as easy as it sounds, but the intangible rewards are incredibly satisfying. One must understand the mentalities of the situations and of those you will encounter and wish to help. One must be quick and correct in determining if help is being provided or if kindness is being taken for weakness. One must be prepared to recognize and, if unavoidable, deal with dangerous situations without becoming a prime target. One cannot become intimidated even though it is easy to do so. One should never provide unsolicited advice. Yea, if you end up helping out in the wrong place at the wrong time, you might get killed. Sometimes you may give up and believe you have lost, only to find you won (you can actually notice a positive and permanent difference, even if they cannot) and I'll tell you what - there's just no feeling like it. Just remember - what you do belongs to you and you only. Changing a life for the better is a private matter and nobody should ever come out feeling obligated, much less even having to say. "Thank You".

The 'light-side': You just passed the mental health check. Reality: One of the worst things you can do and will turn those you are attempting to help into instant enemies.
