While thumbing through a cookbook I ran into a little something called Bourbon Soup. I decided to give it a whirl. Its basically a variation of black bean soup, in which you add 1/4 cup of bourbon at the last stage. When I got to this stage I had second thoughts about the bourbon, so I took out two 1/4 cup samples. The first one got a teaspoon of bourbon, the second got a teaspoon of sherry (I've used sherry on a countless number of recipes). The Results? The one with sherry BLEW AWAY the one with bourbon. This variation will be placed on rotation with the others. If you have second thoughts about adding something to a recipe, take out a couple of samples and add one ingredient to one and another to the second. Trust me, you might surprise yourself.

I made potato soup once (so easy, any retard can make it). The recipe called for half a stick of butter. That sounded like too much, so I cut it in half. Even that was too much. Next time, I'll just use a tablespoon or two.

I get a laugh out of the recipes in the newspaper cooking section. Some of them are so weird & disgusting that I figure they made them up (or adjusted a real recipe) just to fill up space (I'd sure as hell never make them. Or eat it. Some call for like 12 cloves of garlic. Wow, overkill. ), and only food snobs would really prepare it to impress their friends.
I'll stick with my 1950's Meta Givens green cookbook, TYVM. It's got most everything...

Either that or if you make that recipe according to their directions you'll end up with enough of that dish to feed an army! |
