This horrible affectation seems to be everywhere but this woman takes the cake. Sounds like she's being strangled. Unfortunately not by me, though. Look at the bottoms of her FILTHY FEET, too !

I think "Amy" (Varidesk) wins over Swiffer Mom in the Best Vocal Fry contest.

They must have put the Hendersons through the spin cycle of that chinese laundry detergent commercial in the other thread. These people are white. (There, I said it.) "Ba-Bam!" This commercial sucks. And, coincidentally, so does the product. Got a mess? Invest in a real mop. (Especially if you have crumb-crunchers in the house.)

It's called "uptalk", and articles have been written about it. Yeah, it's like they're never quite sure that what they're saying is true---that it's all somehow open for discussion, even statements of fact. Sounds really weak. |

I remember seeing a female comedienne, might have been Brett Butler, doing a routine about different kinds of southern accents. When she did the Tennessee accent she was saying that their voices always go up at the end when they make a statement, making them sound like they're asking a question. It's true, too. If you've ever known anyone from Tennessee you know what I'm talking about. |

Ending every sentence in a question. Drives me nuts. To me, it's an indication that the person speaking is unsure of themselves or what they are saying, even when they are stating facts. It feels like they are insecure and that they either feel like what they are saying will be called in to question, or that they feel that they should not be speaking at all. It is very distracting when trying to have a conversation with someone that does that.

I know my friends' kids (14 y/o boy, 11 y/o girl) do that. I assume they picked it up at school. As a result, their mother picked it up, and now talks like that, too.
I brought up the subject of "uptalk" once to her, thinking maybe she'd get the hint. She didn't. |

It's right up there with another peeve...
Ask any 30-something college-educated person a question these days. Guaranteed: Next word out of their mouth will be "So, ... [fill-in-the-blank]" "How old are you?" "So, I'm thirty-two now...." "What's your favorite hobby?" "So, when I was a kid we used to.... WTF?! If I wanted story-time, I'd visit the local kindergarten. Just answer the f^ckin question!

The first and third videos are hysterical. Particularly the third one. The middle video is just a couple of airheads talking about sh*t that they bought. Even if they weren't up talking, they'd sound like morons.

All this talk about up talking reminds me of these three Seinfeld episodes.
One was about a high talker... Another one was about a low talker... And the other was about a close talker.... Maybe they got the inspiration from the uptalking phenomenon. |

Man, I love this discussion!!
The four really annoying affectations (that I can think of right now) are: 1: Starting every sentence with So... 2: Ending every sentence as a question. 3: Vocal Fry. God, this really annoys me!! 4: Taking two perfectly good words and mashing them together. Gigantic + enormous = ginormous and so on... Check out this video for Proactive "bacne" (refer to number 4 above). The vocal fry at 1:23 makes me want to punch her in the face!! And at 1:57: What is it with black people pronouncing d at the end of a word as a T. It drives me up the wall! "With proactive, I'm going to have a goot day." WTF?! http://www.ispot.tv/ad/Aq8m/proactiv-deep-cleansing-duo-bacne |

Good Lord, I hate the dreaded vocal fry! Who thought that dragging out your words was cute or endearing? It's not! It's annoying! The only thing worse than the dreaded vocal fry is the dreaded vocal fry and the dreaded upspeak(where the last word of the spoken aentence ends in a high pitch as if they are asking a question when they are not) which one particular commercial has a woman speaking in both the dreaded vocal fry and the dreaded upspeak which is so damn annoying!

My name is Donathan, pronounced the same way you pronounce Jonathan, except with a D.😀 Hitting on a Lesbian who speaks to you and about you like trash means you're REALLY desperate! 😀

If you're someone who hates the "vocal fry", then what about this...? I don't know WTF to call that!! All I know is I had to stop watching my favorite TV show while she was on. I'm having trouble even imagining situations where her Maybe an IRS audit? |

My wife watches The Bachelorette. No idea at all why. I don't even know if she know why she watches it. Anyway, the newest incarnation of bachelorette has both a bad case of vocal fry AND uptalk, all at the same time! I can't get out of the room fast enough when that sh*t is on TV. I'd rather watch an endless loop of Jan commercials, than spend five minutes listening to "Jo Jo".

So sorry, dude. Why is it women feel the need to watch this trash tv? I don't get it!! I would assume the majority of the viewers are female. I have seen firsthand how shows like this can affect a woman. And not in a good way either. It's all just fake, scripted nonsense and imo is doing real harm. |

BTW, in these swiffer commercials, someone leaves a swiffer box on the door step, and rings the bell and leaves.
Now, in this day and age, if someone left a box on my door step, and I didn't know who, or where it came from, I would be HIGHLY suspicious. Think prank, or even homemade bomb...who knows? Every time I see one of these commercials and the people open the door and get all excited and take the box in their house, I think, man that would never happen in real life. They'd probably call the cops and have a bomb squad sent out and evacuate the neighborhood just to be on the safe side. I'm NOT KIDDING!! In this day and age, everyone (especially law enforcement) is so one edge and careful about anything unusual. And a box that just showed up on a random door step to me is VERY unusual!!! |
