Here's the opening of Today from Jan. 4, 1982 (the day when Bryant Gumbel started on the show, having recently come off NBC's Sunday NFL coverage of 1981). Like the Australian Today opening of 1985, this one was far more low-key and understated than the way that Today is today (it didn't have the screaming crowds then).

For a sec. I mistaken the John Hancock Tower for New York's WTC One! They both share a similar side profile.
I have problems identitifying Chicago without Sears Tower! Or without that rectangle building with the diamond sloping building to the left that can be seen in the first season opening of Mike and Molly. Wow what a low key opening, this would be considered "boring" by today's audiences! Who are used to fast and frenetic paced openings! |

And what's more, this Today opening had what I still believe to have been the best-ever studio design of the show's history (the Today title stacked up in columns of 8 colored segments apiece [going from pinkish at the bottom all the way to light yellow at the top, the same colors as in the sunburst title of Today then] amid bas-relief blue squares, with the anchors at a desk in the shape of that sunburst title, and flowers in front of that).
And speaking of the Today sunburst title then, it had more segments than the version of today (pardon the pun): 8 segments of varying colors (the same ones as in the studio), instead of just 3 segments of one color as is done now (I think that the one color is bright orange).

Yeah, I think Today really blandified their logo when they rebranded. It looks like a lame rainbow now. Big mistake!

This was back when the Today Show didn't used to be the Kim Kardashian Morning Recap Show. Not to mention, the Endless Lifestyle Segments Show.
Thank you CBS and Charlie Rose...I like seeing real news in the morning.

How about Today from November 4, 1969 when Hugh Downs was still the host:

That, and the late Joe Garagiola was on Today then as well; he would later be on the original $ale of the Century (an NBC game that not much exists of, sadly; in fact, more exists of the 1983-89 Jim Perry version than does of the original).
