The guy who became famous as the announcer who was always seen with one hand holding a pretend earphone over his right ear on Rowan and Martin's Laugh In during the 60's has died at the age of 80.
RIP Gary. |

RIP Gary. Beautiful Downtown Burbank is one of my favorite lines. R&M's Laugh-In was such a great show! Thanks for all the laughs, Mr. Owens. Condolences to his family. |

Why don't they show reruns of Laugh In on TV anymore? Is it not profitable? Are corporations fighting over the copyrights? What gives?

Right now I'm watching episodes of Space Ghost (One of many Cartoons that the late Peggy Charon had yanked off the air in her "crusade") as a tribute to the latest "Fallen Star". RIP Gary Owens.

Maybe 'cuz it kinda sucks. As much as I liked the show back then, it doesn't hold up anymore. It's too "of the era"---probably good as a time capsule of 1968, but that's about it. I think other shows with a kitsch factor (I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Andy Griffith, The Brady Bunch) hold up despite the kitsch, not because of it. They have stories which are more timeless. Laugh-In is nothing but style and kitsch. |

Actually, I think that up until not too long ago, Laugh In was playing on one of the retro stations. Also, I gotta disagree that it "kinda sucks" (or sucks to any degree) or that it was all style & kitsch. Underneath the goofy slapstick, there was quite a bit of ascerbic wit & social commentary going on there. Sure, young people today probably wouldn't relate because they wouldn't get most of the social & political humor (i.e. Nixon, Agnew & McGovern jokes) but that age group is really not the target demographic of those oldies stations anyway. Hell, they still run Hogan's Heroes every night, which was, as we all know, set in WWII. They also still run F-Troop too, which was set in the civil war. And let's not forget M*A*S*H, which takes place in 1950's Korea & also still runs every night (2B2B for that matter). And though those shows aren't social or political, (M*A*S*H is kinda) they take place in an era that, for today's youth, might as well be ancient Rome or Egypt. My guess is that maybe they don't run Laugh In anymore because it has just been played so many times over the decades, they've worn it out. I do know that they're actively marketing, via infomercial, a box set CD collection of "The Best Of Laugh In", or something like that. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008PHCV |

I've only seen Laugh-in a few times since the 60s, and it always fell flat. The topical stuff was old, and the zany, "kooky 60s" stuff had worn itself out. F-Troop and Hogan's Heroes and MASH have more staying power because there are stories and plots, and such things are usually timeless. Also, they're shorter on the kitsch factor because they're not about the era they were made in. But as I said, Laugh-in's a good time capsule. I could watch one episode of it once in awhile, but I couldn't imagine watching a few hour block of it like I might Andy Griffith or The Beverly Hillbillies. It'd be like eating nothing but candy all day. |

Today's young viewers would be saying: look, they had tattoos back then.
A very young Goldie Hawn. And "sock it to me" would be considered wife abuse nowadays.

I think a lot of teenage boys would watch it just to see Goldie, Judy Carne & Joanne Worley dancing in those little bikinis.
I know I would if I was a teenager again. |

It was "Too Violent for Children" and had "No Educational Value". If Mattel or Kenner or Ideal or some other toy company put out a line of "Space Ghost" Toys she'd scream this show "Was an overlong commercial" as well. They didn't appear on TV again until a little something called "Cartoon Network" had come along. (President Ronald Reagan "Deregulated" the TV Industry, allowing many "Banned" cartoon series to be shown again). IMO Cartoon Network (Along with a slew of other channels) "Jumped the Shark" Eons ago. If a channel shows Rowan and Martin's Laugh In and/or Space Ghost this weekend and the next seven days as a Tribute to the late Gary Owens feel free to post on this thread. PS A big advantage of owning a mammoth library of TV shows and movies is the ability of watching a show (and posting about it on this and a few other forums) that someone who starred or produced a show and has passed away as a tribute to him or her. Heaven only knows who and what my next "Tribute to a "Fallen Star" will be. |

And today's young viewers might also be saying "Look, they had anorexia back then, too!" Maybe this is a bad picture, but I don't think people in these days of Kate Upton and Carl's Jr. commercials would think this is hot. Hell, Sophia Vergara in a dress (and at twice the age) looks hotter than a 22 y/o Goldie in a bikini. But back then, I remember always looking forward to these segments. Always liked Hawn after that. And by default, I also like Kate Hudson. |

I suppose if one's idea of beauty is some phony looking android who's probably had a couple of hundred K worth of cosmetic surgery, liposuction, laser lifts & skin rejuvenations, the type of which hadn't even been imagined much less invented back in the day when that pic of GH was taken, maybe Vergara might look better than a young Goldie, but personally, I don't see it. Keep in mind also, when looking at those posed for, magazine cover type pics of Vergara in a bikini vs the old pics of Hawn, there was no such thing as Adobe Photoshop back in Hawn's day. I'm pretty sure most of those really hot bikini shots you see of Vergara have either been highly digitally enhanced, if not altered to the point that you're actually looking at another woman's body. As evidenced by this unposed for papparrazi pic... Couple more here that were too big to post: http://www.gotceleb.com/wp-content/uploads/celebrities/sofia-vergara/bikini-in-porto-cervo/sofia-vergara-bikini-in-porto-cervo-18-2200x1466.jpg http://www.gotceleb.com/wp-content/uploads/celebrities/sofia-vergara/bikini-in-porto-cervo/sofia-vergara-bikini-in-porto-cervo-10-2200x1466.jpg I don't see that as hotter than the above pic of Goldie, whose beauty was all natural. I suppose the part about her being in a dress helps her cause, in that a dress would hide her cellulite!!! And of course, Vergara has bigger boobs, so maybe that's what is influencing your opinion. I dunno. But to me, Vergara or any Kate you can pick out of the current pile of them, can hold a candle to Goldie Hawn circa 1968. |

Sorry Thor, but I think you need glasses. There's no way that pic of Hawn looks anything like Ripa. You can see Ripa's ribcage & sternum thru her skin. She's all bony & sinewy, her skin is sorta loose & she's shapeless. Hawn is thin yes, but she has nice curves which are smooth, soft & graceful. And she doesn't have a pair of big, obtrusive looking jugs hanging off of her chest like Vergara does. Yes, I like petite women. Goldie Hawn was petite. Ripa isn't. She's emaciated. I'm guessing that like most guys, you are hypnotized by big boobs. To most men, the bigger the better & there's no such thing as too big. See a pair of them & everything else disappears. Hence the preference for Vergara over Hawn. I appreciate the beauty of the smaller, more feminine look in that regard. |
