I guess it was bound to happen, a movie based on an old TV show.

*sigh*

This is like when they tried to remake TV's "Ironside" with Blair Underwood.  Didn't work. Ermm

And yes before you ask, the head character in an African American.

*sigh*

So? They do that all of the time. I don't think it matters if the "equalizer" revisioned 30 plus years later is African American. The old TV show part I get the second part, I don't in your post.

I think the fact that it "didn't work" has to do more with the fact that it's Blair Underwood(and that the show kinda sucked) than because they got a black guy playing a white character.

The Equalizer OTOH has Denzel Washington.

Blair Underwood and Denzel Washington are both fine actors.  I don't think it worked because it was just so ingrained in anyone's mind who remembered Raymond Burr.  I gave the show a chance but when it was panned from the get go, I stopped investing my time in watching until it got cancelled.

The writing was bland, the stories were incredibly generic, and Underwood's performance was not impressive. I'd stake money that THOSE were the reasons it failed rather than because people remembered Raymond Burr.

I think we can all be thankful that the part is not being played by Tom Cruise....  LOL

And somebody who used to post here had The Equalizer as his avatar.  Wonder whatever happened to that guy....  Wink

Seems like this could stand on its own rather than try to capitalize on an old show most people probably don't remember anyway.

If I'd been asked to choose an old franchise for a name I'd have used "Death Wish" instead of "Equalizer"

This looks like a film to stand on its own, rather than capitilzing on an old TV show. Which is fine by me. The less connections to the past, the better.

The concept is good.  People like to see heroes kicking bad guys' ass.  It will probably do well.

I remember the tv show, but don't think I watched it.

I watched it a few times way back when. I thought the concept was interesting, but it was pretty generic as were most 'action' shows at the time.

I watched it one time and I remember getting bored with it because the pace of it was so ssssssssllllooooowwww. Other times it entertained me. I can't remember the channel it was on. Its been so long since I seen it. I would like to see it again.

I remember the opening though. It was pretty cool especially with the synthesizer!

I have season 1 on DVD. Some episodes were definitely faster paced than others, but a lot of that had to do with the concept of the show. McCall was ex-CIA(or something), so sometimes problems were handled with straight force, but other times they had to make use of surveillance, intelligence gathering, interrogation, etc.

When I saw the YouTube Ad for this movie, I thought "Bout time they have a hero who just don't have any f***s left to give" and just get to equalizing some big wrongs. The Sia and Eminem song playing in the back ground rocked. Now its all lamed out. They have a new ad featuring his watch being set to get his equalization on. "Beep" henchman dies "beep" 4 henchmen die. "Beep" I am a Pip, and that's alright by me.

This looks like the most generic sh*t ever.

>Archetypical badass agent guy
>Quits to live a normal life
>Lies about his past
>Forced to come back because bad guys
>Forced to balance his old life and new life
>Epiphany at the end

Generic as f**k.
