It made direct reference to "core academic courses". That term has a specific meaning & definition, so there's no reason to mention individual course names.
http://edglossary.org/core-course-of-study/
How exactly are they misrepresenting themselves? I suppose the quality of their website is a matter of opinion, but let's not lose sight of the fact that it's just a website & has nothing to do with what goes on in the school itself. And I had no idea that you were such a connoisseur of web design.
All you need to do is look up what the WI State Standards & Common Core Standards are & voila! There you are. That's what they align with.
So... we have a school that voluntarily & admittedly takes wayward, problem kids who've been in trouble with the law, tries to teach them how to deal with the world, respect other people & generally behave like human beings, while at the same time requiring that they achieve the state mandated level of competency in "core academic courses" (see above definition), but when one or two of them screw up, you take that as your cue to paint them as a failure & heap scorn & derision upon them. Kinda damned if they do & damned if they don't, isn't it? |

Mostly online but also other times. I just saw a poster on another forum jump all over another poster because the second poster didn't like a comedian's routine(s)and didn't think she was funny. And here it comes, the first poster says, "you just don't get her," or you don't have a sense of humor. Pisses me off to no end. What it really boils down to is that people are different for many reasons and so see things differently. This little snot-nosed, know-it-all seemed to think if you don't agree with him then there must be something wrong with you. Pr*ck. BTW, I wasn't the poster being judged, however I did agree with him.

C'mon, Jimbo. Any actual education they get, is online. There's nothing on that bizarre-looking website that emphasizes education. Look at any other school site, and you'll see all sorts of references to actual learning. From a website put out by the school... For the 'school' part, most of your classes are taken on a computer. "The 'school' part". The school part of school?? It makes it seem like academics are an afterthought. Seems there's more emphasis placed on one's "life transcript" (their words). And I have a friend who teaches to the Common Core. He's not fond of it. He says kids can leave that school without having learned the basics of American History. He has kids coming into his Senior History class knowing nothing about the Civil War, and who think "the South" means Los Angeles. He says "how about names, dates, places, facts...rather than articles about whether or not Abe Lincoln was a racist?" Seriously...that's a requirement under Common Core. |

Why do you keep harping on the website? And what is so bizzare about it? It does what most school websites do. As for the online educational curriculum, I don't know where you've been, but that is a growing trend in all schools. And as they explain on their "bizzare" website...
Just like in mainstream schools.
That's because, as they acknowledge, there is, out of necessity, a lot more to a school of that nature than just academics. They are trying to reform juvenile delinquents who've been in jail, for Pete's sake. Of course there's a "school part" & another part... social integration, self confidence & self esteem building, etc. You cannot take a student population like the one they deal with & treat it like a normal suburban middle class school. Anybody should be able to understand that without having it pointed out.
Well come on, your friend teaches in California for cryin' out loud. What more do you expect? And maybe he's just a crappy teacher. But all kidding aside, why are you singling out this one school for teaching to the same Common Core Standards that every other school in 44 out of 50 states is as well? Why is that, in your mind, a cause for singling out this school for criticism? Is it because it's a predominantly black school? Or are you just looking for another opportunity to take a swipe at Obama? Kind of a sidestep if you ask me. And for the record, the way you stated that supposed question about Lincoln, is a gross oversimplification of the way CC seeks to approach a written, in depth analysis of the Gettysburg Address, which is the assignment you are referring to. A lot of right winger websites are making the same kinds of claims. Same old propaganda. |

So, Jimbo, every other kid in the country requires at least 6 hrs/day of classroom or personal instruction to get a basic high school education, but these kids can make do with a little bit of online instruction?? There's nowhere on that school's sites where academics are stressed. I wonder if these kids even get homework assignments. And my teacher buddy---his problem with Common Core is that kids are not getting context. That is, they're being told to analyze the Gettysburg Address without having to learn about all that lead up to it. It's all about the document. |

Food waste- I get pissed off when I buy a bunch of bananas, unripe, only for them to turn brown and spotted the next day! That only happened when I would buy them from Costco. And potatoes, if I don't store them in the fridge it seems like they sprout within a week.

When I have bananas that will probably be turning spotted before I eat 'em, I put 'em in the fridge. The peel will turn black, but the fruit won't ripen as fast. But when they get too ripe, I put 'em in the blender with some milk. Pretty good shake. |

OK, I don't want to keep going on & on about this, so I'll address your post here & hopefully be done with the subject. These kids have to be in school the same amount of time as anyone else in any other school. It says so on the website. You have no idea how much of their day is spent on academics. To say they "do with a little bit of online instruction" is nothing but idle speculation & fabrication. Every school has time for non academic activity during the course of a school week. And re: the website, again, it's just a website. The school is very small, maybe 200 or so students & a small handful of teachers. How fancy do you require their website to be? You seem to be stuck on that website as if it were directly tied to what goes on in the school. And if you read the website you seem to be so familiar with, it did say they were self paced & allowed to continue their school work after hours from home. Self paced learning is nothing new or unusual. Finally, as to your buddy & CC, one would assume that by the time a student got to the point where he/she was tasked with writing a translation of the Gettysburg Address in their own words, then doing a detailed analysis of it, they would have already been exposed to the historical context in prior years' history classes. They aren't giving that assignment to 7th & 8th graders & likely not 9th & 10th graders either. I'm guessing this is an assignment given to juniors &/or seniors who are assumed to have studied & learned the historical context already. If your buddy's students haven't, I guess that may be indicative of the quality of the school he works in or the socioeconomic status of the area it's in. Of course, neither of us has ever visited the school in person, so either one of us could be right or wrong in our assessment. I just believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, when there is no evidence to condemn them. The only "evidence" you seem to have is assumption, exaggeration & fabrication. |

Diploma or not, if you think all that crap they're espousing on their website is positive, you're blind. They should be preparing these kids to participate in the world rather than encourage resentment of it. "Empowerment via a hip-hop curriculum" is bullsh*t. |

I didn't see the words "Empowerment via a hip-hop curriculum" anywhere on that website. Everything I did see suggests that they are working to take troubled, misguided kids with bad attitudes & transform them into positive thinking, functioning members of society while at the same time, requiring them to get the same quality & degree of high school education as every other kid in the US. Looking at the faculty/staff page of the website, I saw that they employ seven teachers. Two MATH teachers, two SCIENCE teachers, two SOCIAL SCIENCE teachers & one ENGLISH teacher, yet you claim that academic subjects are not a part of the curriculum. Given that they do, in fact, employ teachers in each of the four core subject areas of academic knowledge, I wonder, what sort of "explanation" have you conjured up to explain that? I think it's obvious that your real problem with this school is that the students are almost 100% black. You've also made it pretty clear over the years that when it comes to social views, yours can be summed quite simply with... "If it's black it's bad" & "If it ain't white, it ain't right". Oh, & of course the standard rightwing mantra, "If the gub'mint is involved, or it's paid for with taxes, it's automatically bad." & that public schools are a failure. Yet you complain when conservatives such as yourself get "unfairly" labeled as racists. Go figure. |

Nonsense. I blame "progressivism" for many of the problems in the black community. Always have. That would be leftists of any color. They've done awful things to the black community. In fact, I'll bet that most of the teachers at that school are white. And, hmmmm...I wonder if Milwaukee is a Dem or a Repub town. Hmmmmm. As far as the hip-hop curriculum... exploration of personal empowerment via the arts and hip hop curriculum are some of the services that will be offered. Personal empowerment through hip-hop. Y'mean like those inspirational and "empowering" lyrics that insanity posted? Let me remind you: Now every time, every place, everywhere we go Hoes start pointin - they say, "There he go!" Now these motherf**kers know we carry mo' heat than a little bit We don't pull it out over little sh*t And if you catch a lick when I spit, then it won't be a little hit Go read a book you illiterate son of a bitch and step up yo' vocab Don't be surprised if yo' hoe stab out with me and you see us comin down on yo' slab Livin ghetto-fabulous, so mad, you just can't take it But nigga if you hatin I then you wait while I get yo' bitch butt-naked, just break it You gotta pay like you weigh wet wit two pairs of clothes on Now get yo' ass to the back as I'm flyin to the track |

Go ahead & make scapegoats out of whoever makes you feel better about yourself. The real blame lies with social conservatism for creating the problems that progressivism attempted to solve. You rightwingers love to blame the progressivist social welfare system created in the 60's for all of the problems in the black community while ignoring the fact that it was social conservatism that put them in the position to begin with. And don't try to hand me your usual BS about Democrats who voted against the Civil Rights Act or LBJ's comments about blacks, blah, blah, blah. You drag out that stale crap right on cue like a trained parrot everytime & we don't need to see it again because it's not relevant in contrasting progressivism vs social conservatism. The Democrats of that day were SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES of the type that dominate the Republican Party & political right today. It doesn't take a great deal of deep thought or imagination to envision what this country would look like today if it weren't for the progressive social policies you demonize. If you think it's bad now, you can bet your ass that it would be many times worse had nothing ever been done. Rather than blacks living in reasonably decent housing located in scruffy neighborhoods & collecting govt assistance, we'd have them living & dying homeless in the streets or in lean-to shacks in crowded, filthy, disease-ridden shanty town slums outside of every major American city, similar to the ones outside Rio de Janero in Brazil. Of course, you all on the right would probably prefer that, since you'd never have to go to them, see them or even think about them, which would be just fine with you. Progressive policies may not have erased the problems initially created by social conservatism, but it has made them less severe by an inestimable amount.
What has the politics of Milwaukee got to do with anything? You think there aren't other schools similar to this one in Republican cities? Is Milwaukee in a fiscal or financial crisis? And as for your misguided assumption & inaccurate accusation of the school employing a "hip hop curriculum", if you'll go back to the link you posted, you'll see that that was referring to something outside the main curriculum called "ROC". Apparently, ROC involves EXTRA CURRICULAR activities above & beyond the normal school day activities, many of which involve members of the surrounding community. From your link:
And as for those song lyrics... & this is so typical of you... that was one line from one song that was taken out & printed on a poster. That is all it was... a poster. I seriously doubt they are using the rest of those lyrics for anything. So in typical fashion, all you are doing, is trying to portray as foolish, misguided or even downright evil, a school that utilizes certified, professional teachers of academic coursework in conjunction with professional counselors & community members involved in extracurricular activites, to attempt to straighten out some kids who were headed in the wrong direction, all because you saw one line of a rap lyric on a poster & saw the term "hip hop curriculum" on part of the website that deals with activities outside the normal school day. Typical rightwing knee-jerk response. And BTW, the idea of using hip hop music as a bridge to draw black teenagers in, is no different than Christian rock bands using the music that is popular amongst white teenagers to attempt to connect with them. But as I said, as far as you're concerned, "If it's black it's bad & if it ain't white, it ain't right." . |

^^ Have you heard of the chickensh*t "Knockout Game?" It's where some typically young "adult" dickless douchebag runs up to a random someone on the street and sucker punches him (or yes, even her) with the intent to knock him or her out. And it comes as no shock that most if not all targets are elderly people. I can think of plenty of creative forms of deserving punishment for these pussies.

Don't blame the victims - the crooks are smoother than a baby's ass. A friend of ours (75 years old?) just got himself his very first computer. Well, someone called and told him he needed virus protection, took over his computer, etc. then said it would cost $172 to "fix" and he thought they were legitimate. |

Oh, I don't blame them, I just get pissed off sometimes because they're so trusting. I had someone try that computer "fix" thing with me. I thought they were the tech help dept of my anti-virus company. Apparently, they put their phone number online as such. I actually went as far as letting them access my computer & look at some system files. Told me it would cost one hundred dollars to clean up a bunch of unecessary files etc. I told them no thanks. |

I mentioned that recently on one of the threads. My 77 y/o neighbor is always on the verge of falling for those exact calls. He'll "hear them out" and listen to what they have to say, as if he's actually considering it. Luckily, he always has to "check with" his wife, who's much younger and a bit more trusting. Even then, they've often checked with me to see what I think. I just tell 'em it's a scam and not to even engage with any of these people. |
