Edginess takes numerous forms; the trends changing with time. These, however, are my major pet peeves:

Edgy is ok, and definitely is one of the forces that causes change - but it loses part of its appeal when EVERYONE is doing it ALL of the time, and when it's not the creative kind of edgy but the "throw-everything-against-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks" kind of edgy.

If that happens, it won't even matter that much. The young people I know watch little TV. They get their entertainment from video games and Netflix. TV is just something they bother with once in awhile, and even then, it's often stuff that's been DVR'd, and the commercials FF'd through. Ask a kid about a particular commercial, and chances are, they'll have no idea what you're talking about. Even my friends are getting more and more this way. |

Just wait until the day comes when TV commercials start actually entering the realm of graphic pornography. Those Liquid Plumr commercials with the horny housewife & the two grocery store hunks will look like kids' toy ads by comparison. Given the way society is going, that day may arrive sooner than we think. |

^I remember when we first moved to Vegas, the idiot sperm donor came with us while we went looking for the local shops because he'd been living their to work about 3-4 weeks ahead of us. He insisted upon knowing a shortcut and through much yelling, aggivation, and irritation we ended up at the store we wanted to go to...A store that we got to by turning right, going a few blocks, turning left...few more blocks, left again, block or two...and it turned out to be on the exact same street we started out on.

And that boys and girls is why you don't listen when your drunken redneck buddy tells you about that neat short cut he found.

Wrong "edgy", I suppose - but I hope it doesn't become a trend and I wish it would go away.

^ I watched this show on TV awhile back, called The Drug Years. It was 4 parts. The second part was about the late 60s. It was mentioned how, by that time, Madison Avenue had gotten into it, and was making psychedelic ads and TV commercials, and coming up with products like Screaming Yellow Zonkers (popcorn) and Purple Passion (soda), in far-out packaging. |

^True, I certainly remember that and I pretty much spent all my life from 1994-2000 in a small rural town with two channels, one of which was PBS. I still remember a few of these advertising tactics.
Technically, if you look back and look at things with scrutiny, you see it in the 60's as well. Obviously not to the same extreme, but that's because there wasn't as MUCH media to inundate. Dr. DAn mentioned the Beetles. Prime example. Cereals used their images to make sales, the obvious notepads/stationary stuff, there's even a few odd commercials about. plenty of products and companies throughout the ages used celebrities and "edgy" and popular to push their products. Even in the early 1900's, an opera singer, a dancer, a silent actress...put their image or their name on a product and instant combinations of scandal and interest arise. (You can see this in Mr. Selfridge, which does show off a few of these cases, using both real celebrities and the fictional) The WAY advertising and such use edgy stuff and popularity to push their products has changed, but the practice hasn't. I'll bet even the first wheel never took off until Ulga Rockchest grunted her public endorsement. |

Exactly. I was a teen during the 90s. I still remember how everything marketed toward us back then was always EXTREME!!!. It didn't matter what was being advertised, even cornchips had to be IN YOUR FACE!!! That's right, freakin' cornchips had to have ATTITUDE!!! The commercials were all the same. You'd have heavy metal guitar riffs and either some loud guy who wouldn't sound out of place doing a commercial for a monster truck rally or some obnoxious sarcastic guy saying "This isn't your grandfather's (noun)" or "Don't just (verb), (verb) TO THE EXTREME!!!" Personally I actually like some of those ads and commercials and find even the worst of them more tolerable than the "LOLrandom!" humor in every commercial these days. I'll admit it was funny at first but it wore out it's welcome pretty fast when everybody started doing it. I shudder to think what's gonna be the next fad in advertizing. P.S. I actually did have one of the NO! Rules binders in my Trapper Keeper back in 7th grade and remember seeing these Levi's ads in magazines and comic books. http://brandedinthe80s.com/6390/the-90s-were-so-damn-extreme

Well said, both of you! The Beatles were edgy according to my parents' generation, though they didn't use that word for it.
Edgy has its places: Greenwich Village etc. The Far Side (cartoon series) is my personal favorite. Advertising, on the other hand...not a good place. It's a crapshoot for the advertisers already, especially when they use humor. I'm sure that some people hated Speedy the Alka Seltzer mascot. But "let's talk about your bum on Facebook!"? Forgetaboutit!

The difference now is that edgy has become a saleable commodity, and can be found in malls and in TV commercials rather than in Greenwich Village and underground films. |

I don't think it will, because it really hasn't in ages.
Every generation has been "edgy" to their predecessors. That's what causes change. What will probably happen (sadly, in some cases) is that the "edgy" stuff will become normal, and then something new will come up that is "edgy" compared to that norm. |

From Merriam Webster: adjective: new and unusual in a way that is likely to make some people uncomfortable.
That seems to be the fad producing many of the commercials that provoke rants on CIH.
Wish edgy would hurry up and become passé.
