Well that's all true, but I wasn't even just talking about rebellious teenagers. I was talking also about their 20-somethings as well. American pop culture spreads to all these countries as you said, & when it does, it cheapens their appreciation for things like the quality of the entertainment they enjoy, including the music they listen to & TV shows they watch.

I doubt that the newer, more recently produced Brit shows that I watch, like Doc Martin, New Tricks, Father Brown, Death in Paradise etc., are very popular amongst the younger viewing audience over there.

But mostly, the Brit shows I like to watch are from the 70's, 80's & 90's.

Well, to be honest, I think it's always like that. Not just with Britain but most countries.

Youth like to rebel, and what better way then to like something different from their home. Happens in Japan, England, France, Even Egypt, etc. Emulating and absorbing American "culture" over your own is almost a natural stage of growing up.

Still, it makes for hilarious moments when they make fun of those kids in the comedies.

The original "Am I bovvered?" Sketch by Catherine Tate is a good example, right from the opening line. "That Beyoncé is right bing-bing, innit she?"

The tastes of Britain's young people are becoming about the same as those of America's young people.

Rap music, reality TV, etc., etc.

^THe ones who wear Anoraks in the summer, and say things like "Mate, bovvered, innit.".

I'll bet it's big with the chav population, and people who live in Estate housing.

The companies that mostly air overseas shows, like Sky, use the flawed American system of depending on viewership numbers to rate a shows success and popularity.

The BBC (and ITV, I believe) keeps track of these numbers and does use them occasionally, but they put higher precedent on things like the Appreciation index, which not only accounts for what was watched, but how much it was enjoyed.

So a comedy that gets a low total viewership but an A.I of 90 would be more likely to be commissioned for series 2 than a comedy that got massive viewership ratings but A.I in the 50-70s.

I'll bet you it's all the young, dumb ones too.

Young, dumb people are the ones who are turning everything else to sh*t nowadays, so no surprise.

"Genuinely funny"???  It's only genuinely funny if it makes you laugh.  "Witty" is humor without the laughter.

Well, I see that BBT gets a bigger share of the UK audience than Parks and Rec gets in the US.  And by the way, I see Parks and Recreation is being dropped in the UK, while BBT has been renewed for an 8th season there.

So much for the "good taste" of the Brits, huh?  LOL

I watched one episode.  Not sure I even noted that aspect of anyone's character in the show.

Which is odd, given that that's been the major theme of almost every episode.

I still didn't know what was supposed to be funny. Wink

Well, 3 million viewers for Parks and Rec, compared to 18 million viewers for Big Bang Theory in 2013, tells me more people "get" BBT's humor than they do Parks and Rec's.

[sarcasm]Well of course. As we all know, popularity = quality, because the American viewing public (the same one that tunes in in droves to shows like American Idol & The Biggest Loser) is known for it's good taste in entertainment & that the more intelligently written something is, the more popular it will be. [/sarcasm]

I wouldn't necessarily use the popularity of a TV show with the American viewing audience, as a gauge of how well it's written or how genuinely funny & witty it is.

The American TV viewing audience not exactly being known for it's judgement in such matters.

Smile

When did you watch it? The first season was really shaky, and I was honestly surprised it kept going. But the following few seasons were a riot. Lately unfortunately they seem to have burned out again.

True.

I remember kind of turning my nose up at it the first season, referring to it as "The Govt. Office", in reference to my opinion that it was just a ripoff of The Office, only set in the offices of a local govt rather than a corporation. I figured it would be gone after one season if it even lasted that long. Plus, I didn't much care for Amy Poehler even while she was on SNL.

When it came on the second season, I could tell that it had improved vastly, they had added some new characters that were very amusingly quirky & I began to look forward to watching it every week.

It was a few years ago, and I usually just watch comedies in syndication, so it might very well have been from that first season.

I watched part of it last month. I could only stand about 15 minutes. It reminded me of "New Girl". I could only endure 10 minutes of that nonsense. I don't think a laugh track would help. I would end up confused as to what was being laughed at.

I don't knowwho the heck Amy Poehler is, prolly from some show I don't watch like 30 Rock.

Amy Pohler is a former SNL cast member from the Tina Fey era. She's been on 30 Rock as a guest, but the show she stars in is called Parks and Recreation.

A very good show, actually, & one I'm sure you would like if for no other reason than the character Ron Swanson....

Great character. The actor who plays him is Nick Offerman.

Swanson is great. I've posted the "bacon and eggs" bit on a few other sites myself.

My question re: the ad was, who wears jeans to a job interview at a law firm?

Although, with a pooter like that girl's, it would likely be a plus.

I think Gasteyer still has a small role on Suburgatory, and she has done some Broadway and other stage work.

As for the commercial... reminds me of the over-friendly TSA agent and the jeans. But I admit, I did smile when I saw this one. But when it aired for the 10th time in a 2-hour span of watching TV last night, I started grimacing more and more when it came on. It was getting too long and drawn out for me.

Poehler is successful because she created & wrote a hit TV show.

Just like Fey was the creator of 30 Rock.

I guess Gasteyer was only a performer.

Or maybe she's married to some wealthy, successful producer or something, so she possibly doesn't need to work.

I remember that.  Good stuff.  Funny how I know more of Gasteyer's stuff than I do Poehler's---but Poehler's the one who seems to have made it bigger in show biz.

Yeah, & she also did the NPR radio show spoof, one episode of which was the now infamous Alec Baldwin "Schweddy Balls" sketch.
