Every day on the news, the RIAA is going ape sh*t over file-sharing services ruining their business. People can download music for free, says the RIAA, and those are people who aren't buying cd's in the store.
I'd like to point out that the Public Library System has been in place forever. Anyone who wants to read the latest bestseller can get it for free at the library, where it is then passed on to another reader. There's two readers that didn't buy the book. And I don't hear the publishing industry raising hell over it. People still buy books, and publishers still get paid. Writers don't drive Bentleys upholstered with Burberry fabric. I didn't see Chuck Palahniuk on MTV Cribs. Recording artists are paid exorbitant sums. How dare the RIAA even imply that file sharing is taking food out of anyone's mouth! It's so stupid and transparent, it's making my head hurt. |

Good points. Further, just how many times are we supposed to purchase an album? The technology has gone from LP (vinyl) to 8-track tapes to cassette tapes to CDs. And each required a new purchase of the very same material.
So, at what point do you say, "ENOUGH! I have bought this album five times already!"? |

I have 45s, albums, cassettes, CDs, and MP3 downloads...as well as the technology to play them. Maybe somewhere down the line, I'll have to upgrade to the next bit of technology, but even then, I'll still have my 45s, albums, cassettes, CDs, and MP3s...as well as the methods to play them.

Great point NA! Many libraries even have CD's you can check out FOR FREE and copy at home at your own leisure. Why no outcry?
I used to work in this place across the street from a record store. We played our favorite CD's all day, despite this being technically illegal (you're supposed to license the rights from BMI to play recorded music in a public place). Anyway, I can't count how many times our customers said, "wow what band is this? I like it!" and then they'd go straight across the street and buy that very album. They never would have heard of it if we weren't playing it "illegally" and the record companies would have never had those sales. The fools only see the loss for that one pirated CD, and never realize that maybe 10 people had a chance to hear it and went out to get the album (or download it or whatever) that NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED if it weren't for file sharing or what have you. I think they call it "not seeing the forest for the trees" or "throwing out the baby with the bathwater" or "UNMITIGATED STUPIDITY!" |

what really ticks me off about copyright law is that corporations go apesh*t even about rare material being shown that's at least 20 or 30 years old, that it STUFF that hasn't been seen for a VERY VERY LONG TIME, and probably stuff not one person today has even heard of. The sad thing is most stuff posted are only small segments of a program, and mostly not even entire program, yet the million dollar corporations STILL SUE, WTF?

Illegal downloading is nothing compared to the batsh*t craziness going on in the UK over "illegal listening". (It's a long read, but worth it.) Don't think it won't eventually happen here.... http://www.fsb.org.uk/discuss/forum_posts.asp?TID=599&PN=1&SID=a2feecf5b9d2df13z424b5fdd96db8b4 |

Screw those SOBs. They make millions a year, & yet they have the nerve to push around the "little people" for downloading?? They can take that viewpoint, roll it into the shape of their choice, and firmly plug it up theirs. Bastards.

Yeah!!!!
Damn right!!!!
And let's not forget the shoplifters!!!!
Ya don't hear em cryin & whinin about all the people who shoplift CD's do ya????
Oh wait..... they DO cry & whine about those people.
Just not as loud I guess.
Nevermind.
But seriously.... what also pisses me off is their attempt to shut down guitar tab sites on the internet.
How unbelievably greedy can they get?????
I wonder how long it will be before they start going after people posting free song lessons on YouTube....

Don't forget that the besieged record executives have to pay out, like, a whole two cents on every dollar to the musicians and artists who actually write and perform the music. I mean, we all have a civic duty to make the rich super-rich, don't we? ![]() |

Great point!! The RIAA expects us to change with the times and technology(and buy the new format) yet they refuse to change. Internet downloading and sharing is the way of the future, get with it!! It's funny to think many of you in your 40s or 50s have actually bought the SAME song more than once. Records, cassette tapes, CDs and now MP3. Ridiculous. The RIAA are legal bullies. They go after 13 year olds for "illegally"(I refuse to use that term, but I'm quoting) "illegally downloading music"(sic). |

Ares & DVD Video Soft (the latter for getting songs off of YouTube) are my personal favorites.

It was the music industry's choice to hold on to the 20th century, and never let go with their outdated practices. As boneheaded as the music industry is, at least they don't put 'anti piracy' audio propaganda at the beginning of music CD's. |

Don't give them ideas.
YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CAR. Oh, sh*t. *Madly presses the Next Track button; nothing happens* YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CD. (Which would be wonderful if I'd just shoplifted it.) Oh, the horror. |

I still don't see what's wrong with DLing a CD. No one really uses money, it's just propaganda used to make people feel guilty...

I had a huge LP collection...over 1,000, and have downloaded most of the old ones. I bought the records once, I'm not paying twice! FU Lars Loser Ulrich!

I do blame Metallica for most of this.
It was a main reason to cut them loose years ago. |

Metallica pffffffffffffffff. Where the Angel of Overdue Band Breakups when you need him?
Also, I agree with any and all sentiments that Lars Ulrich is an overrated piece of crybaby trash who's quite lucky people like me have chosen not to hunt him for sport. Or at least force him to listen to his own drumming on the St. Anger album repeatedly. "Oh god stop! I'm sorry! You can download anything you want, just turn this nightmare off!!! Was this mixed in a trash can?!?! Oh the humanity!!!" |

You owe the companies nothing. You don't owe them any courtesy. They have rearranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked your permission, don't even start asking for theirs.

And the most insulting part is their product is crap. Many artists are crap due to the "loudness war". Somewhere along the line it was decided that LOUDER = BETTER. So the artists respond by mastering the hell out of it until it sounds like ass. So that DOUCHE wants us to buy his crappy, loud, over-mastered album? I think not!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/sep/17/metallica.guitar.hero.loudness.war http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122228767729272339.html#project%3DMETALLICA0809 |

Another thing that irritates me about this whole thing is them taking down music on You Tube. I use You Tube for a lot of music cause the stuff I like the most isn't easily found anywhere else. I have an MD (yes that is minidisc) recorder and I grab the audio off You Tube with it. It's quite convenient. I know there are supposed to be programs for this kinda thing but anyway.. Recently an album came out and it was on YT and I grabbed it, and like 2 days later all the tracks had been pulled from the site. I guess it is to prevent ppl like me from doing what I do. Looks like they were too late. :P
