Auto-play ads should not exist.

I closed my Facebook down before the election because it was making me hate my friends. Nothing that's happened since has made me want to go back, and this doesn't help either!

In 5 - 10 years, everything you do & every link you click on the internet will probably involve autoplay video ads.

They might even offer more expensive "premium" internet services that block them out.

I wouldn't mind them so much if they were faster & had no audio.

Well, there has to be a point where people just won't bother going to such sites.  I'm sure the advertisers realize there's just so much the consumers will take before it starts working against their goals.  Of course, they'll take it as far as they can.

There are occasions (usually for the sake of something here on CIH) when I find myself going to a celeb gossip website.  Those are the worst.  Besides the excessive use of pink and purple, those sites are always chock full of ads and general crap.  I always regret opening up those pages.

Ugh!!!  I hate hearing this!  I do love Facebook because I get to stay in constant touch with my friends from all over the world, so I'd never delete my account.  But I tell you, these ads are getting so tiresome as it is.  I now find that my newsfeed is clogged with groups that are very much against my political and personal beliefs requesting that I "like" their pages.  Ugh!

Very true. That's why I kept it as long as I did. It's really set up for keeping in touch more efficiently than the older methods. Unfortunately, the negatives won, at least in my case.

I'm fine with ads. I get why they exist. But auto-play is rude. It's rude to interrupt. Grown-ups should know better.

Yes, I understand why ads exist, but Facebook was just fine for YEARS without them, much less intrusive ones that autoplay! Why the SUDDEN need for them now?

I'm honestly surprised sponsors don't realize that when ads invade their favorite sites, they don't go "Wow! Thanks [insert company here]!! I'm so glad you interrupted my important task to peddle the same **** I see every commercial break on television already!! I'm on my way RIGHT ****ING NOW to buy your product!"

Or are they still being spoonfed that blatantly false "Any publicity is good publicity" line in marketing school (or wherever it is they go)?

I think advertisers work on the law of averages. Apparently, they have statistical data that tells them that if x number of people are exposed to their product, it will increase their sales x%, or something like that.

Therefore, they are willing to pay website owners to stick those annoying ads on their page & pay them everytime somebody not only initiates the ad, but watches it all the way through.

I guess there is convincing evidence that just exposing people to a product name & image, even if it isn't in a way that makes them happy about being exposed to it, will increase their chances of choosing that item amongst the others on the shelf.

The rule for mail order advertising in newspapers and magazines was if you got a 1% response rate, you were doing really good.  The media may have changed, but I doubt if the response rate has changed by much....

And where are all the damn hackers?  You'd think the adspammers would be easy targets for putting in parody ads....

That would be even worse.  Youtube parodies are awful.  Plus, they really piss me off when I'm looking on Youtube for a commercial to post here, and all I get are parodies made by teenagers.

I have one, but I just talk to my friends and discuss roleplay scenarios with them. Geek stuff. The normal people who use their Facebooks for junk like the Harlem Shake should shut them down.

Exactly all the spammers and crap like that was why I got rid of myspace. Sadly yes it does seem like most advertizing companies still operate on the same mentality as your average two year old.

My fear is, how easy would it be for some ass to hack this new feature to put up their own videos or music onto their pages? Remember, that's what ultimately led to the death of Msypace - Facebook doesn't want to make this same mistake, even if indirectly.
