"Sandy" has always conjured up for me images of pretty girls on the beach.  But this "Sandy" is looking pretty ugly:

What makes it worse is that she's forecast to merge with that front to form a "superstorm" as the meteorologists put it.  It may be a rough early next week for the people along the coast.

It is a "breezy" day here in central Florida right now.

Schools in some coastal counties are closed today because expected wind speeds are too high to operate school busses in.

New York City's right in its path so that means Mooch needs to prepare for whatever comes her way.

This really sucks.

Just stock up on non-perishable foods, bottle up plenty of water & tie everything down that can be tied down.

Then relax.

Read a book.

Worrying will not help anythimg.

The wind is really picking up down here.

Gusts are beginning to howl.

My mom lives just a few miles inland from the coast, too.

Hafta give her a call later & check in.

They've weathered quite a few storms over there in the past.

You all up in the NE are the ones who need to hang on tight with this one though.

Hey, brita...aren't you at the Jersey shore somewhere, like maybe Cape May?  I'm not sure why I think that, but that seems to be what I recall.

Oops.... Maybe I shoulda said "sit tight" instead...

My mom lives in central Brevard County, about 4-5 miles or so inland from Cocoa Beach, "as the crow flies" (in a straight line).

Driving on the roads, it's a bit further, but she's basically right on the coast for all intents & purposes.

Not a lot of land between her house & the shoreline to weaken a storm's strength like over here wher I live, which is about 50 miles inland.

Who here would make a wish that would result in having this stupid storm disappear forever?

I can't stand this storm it has me on edge what's it's current path?

I hope we don't lose power. I hope we don't lose our house. I hope it goes somewhere else y'know? like the Censoreding ocean.

I wouldn't think it would still be strong enough to do any real destruction by the time it gets up near you guys.

I would think the cooler waters up there would weaken it to the point where it would basically just cause some flooding very close to the shoreline & a bit of beach erosion.

But keep your guards up anyway.

As of now they have the landfall forecast right at Delaware, still as a hurricane. Minimal/Post Tropical hurricane, but a hurricane nonetheless.

Thing is, it's already a huge storm area wise, and depending on how it merges with that front, it could affect a huge area of the NE.   Everyone from I'd say Virginia to Mass definitely needs to keep an eye on this thing.

Every once in a while a hurricane/tropical storm will get far enough in to cause us some more serious trouble than normal.  TWC and local stations have us with much rain and a couple of days of extremely high winds.  And I hate high winds more than any other weather phenom--they make me grit my teeth--don't know why, just do.  Disapprove

TWC is throwing up all kinds of depressing warnings. "Dominion Power says to be prepared for the long haul."

Great

Wonderful

WTF is that supposed to mean?  Buy a generator?

I have a book of matches and a few candles laying about. An oil lamp somewhere around here, too.

Lowes/Home Depot and all the supermarkets will be a madhouse this weekend.

Depressing news...Ouch

That sucks, Tiz.

Being without power for an extended period is the pits.

If it does happen, take some solace in the fact that it's not August & nasty hot.

If you're without so much as an electric fan this time of year, at least you can still be comfortable.

During some storm in 2011, my bro went to Lowe's, Home Depot, etc., to get a generator, but they were out of 'em.  He had to share one with a neighbor.  His need wasn't about being comfortable or being able to read; it was about being able to power the pump in his newly finished basement.  As it was, even with the generator, he and his wife still had to extract water with buckets and dump it down the sink.  They took 3-hour sleeping shifts 'cuz I think the ordeal lasted two days.

Yeah, in 2004 we got hit by Charlie on Friday, August 13th.

The power went out at about 7pm & didn't come back on until around 6pm the next Friday.

It was literally one hour shy of being off for an entire week.

I think my mom's was off for close to TWO weeks.

And it was mid August in Florida...

In August it's "The Humid Hell Hole State".

Not much better in September either.

Current weather conditions aside, it's getting very nice around here now, though.

Sunny & 70's next week!!!
