My plum tree came uprooted during our storm, and is now blocking the garage and front door. I guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. Hopefully, I can save the tree.

Sounds like one heck of a storm, Thor! Lots of damage around you?

From what I understand, there are trees down, blocking roads, and there are branches everywhere. Seeing as how I can't get my car out of the garage, I can't experience all of that fun. Just my own.
This storm was what was left of that typhoon in the Pacific that caused all that damage last week.

I have a kitten who chose to take a nap on my lap while I was sitting here on the computer.
Now I'm done, have other things to do...but the cat is still here. And he's comfortable. So I have to sit here and wait until he's done.... I think both of my legs fell asleep, btw. |

Yeah. I used to get sucked into that, too, Holly. With Killer. What I now do is pick him up gently, and place him down on the nearby couch. Usually, this'll wake him up and he'll dart off. But hey, that's his decision.
If you want to, you can give your cat a little kiss on the head in the process. The kiss does nothing for the cat, but it'll make you feel better.

Mallory's being a nudge today. It's raining outside, and he's bored. He wants me to chase him around the house. He keeps thinking it's going to happen, but it never does. I wish he'd just go and watch TV or stare at the air or something.

Or he can do like TJ and just caterwaul at the wall . . . or a piece of furniture.

I've known cats who did that. Or they'd wail into an open closet door. What's that all about?

Thor, he's 18-1/2 now, and has started the decline. He's on blood pressure meds, but I don't have the money to do a blood panel to find out the "underlying cause." To me, the underlying cause is old age. To spend $200 for bloodwork just to find out what else is wrong--and can't afford to treat him for--is ridiculous. The vet agreed with me that at this point, it's just a question of quality of life.
His vision is being affected, although not to the extent where he can't get around like he used to, and he's wailing at walls, which, the vet tells me, is kind of like senility in people. Sometimes you just have to call his name and he "snaps" back into now. It makes me very sad, but I can assure you that he is not suffering. The minute I think he is, I will do the right thing. So I'm just enjoying the time we have left. (He's also become very demanding when he wants attention; it's like he's yelling at me.) I won't be getting another cat, though. It's become too expensive, especially since I don't have money for the vet. As my sister said, it's difficult to picture me not having a cat after 31 years of having one. (Sorry, has this thread drifted?) |

Wow, Faith! 18½! That's a pretty long life.
I don't know what I would do if one of my cats' vision was affected. Well, "affected" is one thing. Blind would be something else. I guess it depends on how stressed it made him. Same with any illness, for that matter.
Yes, suffering is no good. At that point, keeping a pet alive does nothing but alleviate some sort of anguish on the owner's part, and delay the inevitable.
My neighb (the one whose cat Sneakers moved into my house) did the math and determined that Sneakers is now 17 (you'd never know it). At that point, I had to bring up what to do in case the cat gets sick. He said he will take full responsibility for him.
I was just glad to get that out of the way. Not that I'll mind helping out, but it was good to determine whose responsibility the cat is, 'cause at this point, he's been living at my house for several years.

I couldn't quite tell if Poptart was suffering. Some days were better than others. The vet was on the fence about it, as well. At one point after I'd been treating her with subcutaneous (needle under the scruff of her neck) fluids, the vet did tell me "if you were to consider intervening, I'd support you."
I waited another three months, after that. |

TJ is not suffering, although I'm not sure about the stress level. I promise you, Thor, the minute I think he IS suffering, I will do what I must.
