I was waiting for a video to be available before commenting on this commercial, yet none seems to be surfacing. But I cannot wait any longer. I hate this commercial and I must vent.

The commercial is for St. Jude Children's Hospital. It's a full 2 minutes long and features footage of children suffering from cancer while a mournful and religious-sounding song plays. The song is definitely the worst part of the commercial; it's basically just a woman moaning and "woooooo"ing with unbearable pain and sadness in her voice as a piano plays faintly in the background--it's extremely intrusive and actually rather creepy.

The main problem, however, is that the Hallmark Channel shows this commercial in *every* ad break during its late-night block of sitcoms (e.g., during 2am and 3am episodes of "Cheers" and "Frasier"). So one second you're chuckling at a Norm Peterson witticism, and the next you're looking at dying children while this mournful song plays for a full two minutes. Oh, and then you're right back to watching Carla playing a silly prank on Cliff or whatever. Essentially, this commercial is like this relentless buzzkill, extinguishing whatever mood elevation one may get from these shows by interrupting  every few minutes with a montage of the saddest imagery and music imaginable.

I agree.  Why should we be subjected to weepy, slobbering images of dying children?  If someone else is stupid enough to send money to St. Jude, great, but leave the rest of us alone.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

I REFUSE TO SUPPORT OTHER PEOPLE'S CHILDREN.

It's not my problem if they're autistic, have cleft palates, require diapers or special medication, if they are starving, or if they have cancer.  People who cannot financially support children should be forcibly prevented from having ANY, either by law or by medical means.  Fertility drugs ought to be BANNED.  Women are producing litters of children they can't afford to raise, so they turn to charity, welfare or reality television.  The world is so overpopulated and polluted now that the climate is changing literally by the day.  The disasters we've already seen are nothing compared to what's coming.  China has the right idea: one child per household.  The rest get terminated.

If I've offended anybody, I don't care.  Enough is enough.

I'm not offended, Cherry, and I agree with you to an extent, but that does kind of support the belief among many conservatives that Planned Parenthood, with eugenics having been its original philosophy (see Margaret Sanger) and with the prevalence of such clinics in black inner cities and other poor areas, still has an underlying goal of lowering certain "inferior" populations.

And whenever this is pointed out (see article below), the pro-abortion people dismiss the argument as being ridiculous or unfounded or hateful or simply and absolutely untrue.  To them, it's always about some sacrosanct "right to choose".

Harsh, Cherry. I had cancer when I was 2-5 years old.
I don't mind supporting kids that need help. If I had more money. Sure, people should probably have less kids, but dang.

Also, I think Sanger was stupid enough to agree with Eugenics, but that doesn't mean PPs aren't in neighbourhoods not just providing abortions, but in fact, medical care. I'm not sure I'd listen to that Santorum dude and I'm torn when it comes to abortion and do NOT want to argue about it.

Many people in this country cannot afford health insurance.  St. Jude turns no children away.  That's why they need support so they can treat sick kids.  I am indeed "stupid enough" to send the occasional check.  I don't see this as "supporting other people's children".  I see it as a small way I can give back.  You know...trying not to live my life as a miserable, uncaring,  dried-up c&nt?  Wink

I don't think it was about "stupid".  I think there was a very "progressive" attitude at the time that believed certain people to be inferior and less worthy of life.  The emerging theories of evolution played a part in this.  I really think they believed their intentions to be righteous.  I really think they believed that they themselves were the superior and enlightened ones.  Not much different today, really.

The same here.  I hate those stupid St. Jude commercials and always change the channel when they come on.  I'm sure they get plenty of money from people who just looooooooove children, but they ain't getting a cent from me.  They're not about to force a guilt trip upon me.

From what I can tell, it's still the kind, loving progressives who support unrestricted access to abortion, and the government funding of such.  Sanger would be proud.

A little background - when Danny Thomas was just starting out, he would pray that he would one day become famous. And he swore to St. Jude that if he ever did make it big in Hollywood, he would do something very generous.

Hence, the birth of St. Jude's hospital.

That's why now you see Marla Thomas in the commercials. Taking over where her dad left off.

I don't view it as supporting other people's children - that I wouldn't do. But these are children who got a bad break. It pains me to see anyone that sick. If I had the $, I would help.

Agreed, Mad.

Danny Thomas remains one of my heroes - and, well...Marlo is Danny all over again - and then some. Thank goodness for people like them.

I've long looked at Saint Jude's as a 'safe haven' and blessing for the unfortunate that never had a clue as to why they were born to suffer with little- to- no- hope.

Back in the mid-to-late  '80s, I actually met Danny Thomas while passing through the DFW (Dallas) airport; it was very near the end for him, but he was literally swarmed by people (and surrounded by 'protection'). He was extremely cordial and tried to get in a few words with every individual that was anywhere nearby...I think I just 'felt good' after a minute around him; don't even remember what we chatted about.

I think that before anyone considers objecting to the commercials, learn a bit about the organization, what 'the dream' was, and what it took to achieve...now it is a matter of 'maintenance'.

Probably true.
Danny Thomas died, doncha know...about 20 years ago.
Marlo isn't a 'spring chicken' anymore, either.
Advertising costs money.
People are donating to charities of their choice, too...which isn't a bad thing.
They just never think of places like St Jude's until they need them.

I should donate to that place. I WENT there as a kid. I don't remember it.

Thor, that whole these people are superior to those people thing started WAY before a belief in evolution. There's the great chain of being to consider. That predates evolution. Plus Darwin never even came up with social darwinism in the first place. Folks just glarmed on to it to excuse them being rich and other folks struggling and being poor, not to mention folks of other races.
Before they'd use the bible to justify slavery. Folks have to use anything they can to justify things that are wrong.

True, but theories of evolution helped validate it...they gave people a scientific excuse to see others as inferior and, in Sanger's own words, "to create a race of thoroughbreds".

Not really, again, social darwinism isn't so much science as an update of the Great Chain of Being, hierarchy that already existed. You already had folks thinking that poor people were inferior and not very bright but instead they weren't godly enough or something. Social darwinism just meant you used brain measurements or something silly like that. But evolution is more about the origin of species, not about ordering people into a hierarchy.

That's why I said that evolution was being used as an excuse.  "Godly" didn't work for the likes of Sanger, but "science" did.

But it doesn't surprise me in the least to see you once again implying some evil, ulterior motive to those who support the idea of abortion being a personal matter between a woman & her doctor.

Seems there are a lot of these "Save the animals in shelters" and "Help the dying children" ads (often playing one after the other.)    The solution is simple:  Give the dying kids pets.  Takes care of both problems at the same time.  (Makes the kid happy, and the cat or dog gets a new home.)  Probably not a good idea to give pets to the starving children, though....

I post videos of Bill Maher because, unlike PJ O'Rourke, Maher is actually FUNNY & makes cogent points about SPECIFIC topics or situations in a humorous, entertaining manner.

And that other thing (15 differences...) was just for a laugh. A laugh over that which is based in truth.

That crap you posted by O'Rourke is nothing more than a bunch of generalizations & exaggerations that was supposed to, I'm guessing, somehow back up your "point" about progressives supposedly wanting to create a "master race" via birth control, or whatever that absurd nonsense was all about.
