Remember when Sunday Morning debuted on CBS on January 28, 1979 with original anchor Charles Kuralt? Well, since Sunday Morning was preempted yesterday for an NFL broadcast from London, CBS did something special: they put up that entire 1/28/79 premiere broadcast (video in 3 parts).

Such a breath of fresh air! Notice when they went to multiple reporters they didn't do multiple screens a la The Brady Bunch opening. Instead they went to one-by-one. I like this long drawn out informative news with minimal graphics. Notice how balanced it is too. That decade is dead sadly. Nowadays its flashy graphics with snippits of news with celebrity gossip and hashtag this and that! Hate it!

Yeah, they do too many celebrity profiles these days, which is why I don't watch it that much.
They do still do some interesting stuff, but IJDGAF about some opera singer or Broadway diva or Serena Williams or whoever. |

One of the things that, IMO, was really special about this is that the title sequence that would be used for most of the Kuralt era was not only used at the top of the show; sometimes, when the show resumed after breaks, the title sequence would be replayed in full, and then the announcer would say, after the studio shot faded in again, "It's Sunday Morning on CBS, and here again is Charles Kuralt" (this is something that, sadly, is no longer done now that we have Charles Osgood, who has been there for more than twenty years [1994-now]). Why was this done then?

BTW when I mentioned the news being "flashy graphics with celebrity gossip with snippits of news and hashtag this and that" I meant cable news and such. However I did say no celebrities for this episode to make a point they did not need celebrities to interest people way back then!

That was Kuralt's trademark...interviewing "regular folks". Even when word came out after he'd died thathe'd had a second wife and family 'on the road' somewhere, it didn't damage his reputation.

Cable news doesn't have much of that stuff. When they do, I find it annoying, unless there's some broader or more serious significance to the story---such as Bill Cosby's rape allegations. I certainly don't need to hear about who's dating who. |

Is it me or does the original music sound more ethereal? I've noticed that the original music ended with one note while the current has three!

The reason why the ethereal sound when Sunday Morning started, per Wikipedia, is because they were using a baroque trumpet version of "Abblasen" by Don Smithers (the original song was attributed to Gottfried Reiche). The current version is the one by Wynton Marsalis, and that's the one that has the three notes at the end of it. |
